Top-fed Vertical Radiators - TRV position?

You're right! Stelrad's site shows exactly that on their CWS vertical range. TRV with remote sensor might well be the way to go.

Cannot find outside water stopcock (Ed.)

Yeah, what have the Romans ever done for us?? TBF on the "plumber" I wouldn't expect a 30 year old to know how to wipe a joint any more than to repair a leaded window. At least he had the good sense to decline a job he wasn't confident of completing! Now, where's that shave hook I retired 30...

Copper joint woes - water in pipes advice

NO! Push a twist up half or a third of it's length and remove when sodden. Repeat until a dry bit stays dry. Don't leave anything in the pipe! Don't try using toilet paper which will disintegrate and not pull out! I'm not recommending this as standard practice, just a trick I have used when...

    Basin with round tap holes

You can use a tapmate washer and a brass backnut for that "no-one's ever going to wiggle this" approach but it's rarely needed. https://www.plumbers-mate-sales.co.uk/tapmate-basin-and-kitchen-tap-washer-12in---72000177-1211-p.asp

    Microbore pipe - complete garbage?

Microbore is not garbage. Used correctly it has its place. It does have a lower heat carrying capacity than a larger pipe and is more likely to block on a sludged system. +1
