Suspicious RSJ / floor joist attachment

They seem pretty happy with it to be honest. A lot of people seem to be opting for the rsj to be hidden in the ceiling, so it's a case of fit the joists on one side into the web and then extend the joists on the other side into the web on the other side..... It's either that or joist hangers.

^^^^ To add, then inserting noggins between the extended joists to again stop any movement.

Using more joists bolted on to the existing (but now shorter) joists.

    Garden help

I've done a fair few and to be honest I'm dead against digging wooden posts into the ground unless it really has to be done as a last resort. Wood is still wood and no matter how well it is treated it stays in better condition above ground. If there isn't a major difference in the level of your...

    Garden help

It is pricey.... especially if you have a large area to cover. Standard wooden decking generally looks after itself but needs washing and cleaning and then oiling at least twice a year. I'd use the Ronseal stuff as the cheaper shop's own brand stuff is useless!

You can buy a roll of something called a damp proof course from most builders merchants/DIY stores.

    Fence panel problems

^^^^ I mean theoretically it could go straight down. But it'd probably take less time to do it how you did than to set it up to go straight down in one go with such tight tolerances.

    Ballpark figure please

Lol... No..... I meant you could hang a TV without any problems but chat with a SE with regards to the building itself hahahahahaa !!!!

    Fence panel problems

Had it rained by any chance? Wood soaks up rain/water and expands....? I get what you mean by alternate sides - it sounds like it was just very tight. You could get it to go down in one go but with such little tolerance it will be difficult.

Ok, to be honest, unless you take that tree out, you're always going to get movement depending on its growth/weather. When you lay the deck frame down, you'd normally construct the frame, sit it in place on top of a few bricks, level it out and then attach the legs to the frame. (I'd also advise...

Suspicious RSJ / floor joist attachment

Where I am BC like it done that way on one side and then like the joists on the other side to be extended into the web from the other side. Once done, Noggins put in place to stop any movement. This is similar but just that joists on both sides will need to be extended into the web.

If you don't mind spending the money go for a Hilti. Nothing stops one of those!

Tool for re-opening a brick wall

A grinder with a diamond edged blade will do the trick to groove out the mortar, I'd keep the wall wet though to keep the blade cool and also to keep the level of dust down too. You could also use a drill to drill through the mortar, once you get a few bricks loose, they'll start coming out...

How far is the tree from the flags where you want the decking to be? What are the current flags like? Are they in good condition?

    Fence panel problems

It sounds as if the posts are very tight. The panel would have to go down square to the posts - i.e, not 1 side before the other. But at least that means the fence panels won't be loose.

    Ballpark figure please

Yep you will, without any problems. It may be an idea to have a quick chat with a structural engineer so that you can put your mind at rest and to help you choose what you're looking for though. Everyone on a forum can tell you their opinion but an engineer can give you the full storey in...

    Lost with a damaged wall

Your neighbour seems to have built his garage on your property...... However I think that if it's been there 5 years or more though, you won't be able to do much about it? Either just let it all collapse as Himaginn said or alternatively 1. Clean the wall right out. Make sure you remove all...

    Extremely wet under broken gully.

As tomfe said, it looks as if you have another waste pipe coming out from under your house just behind the drain cover? If this is still in use, I'd be sure to connect it up before you back fill.

Suspicious RSJ / floor joist attachment

the joists should have been trimmed and inserted into the web of the rsj as a lot of people have already said. Then noggins inserted between the joists to stop them bowing or moving. The builder doesn't seem to have done it right from what I can see and I would get the inspector in as soon as...
