Motorised 2 port valve; what has slowed it?

I just tested the new unit in position, opening it with the Samsung unit by invoking DHW. It opened in 12.8 seconds - the old one takes 12.5 seconds when not in a pressurised system on the bench. Seems pretty much the same to me >CH circulation pumps are well known for getting 'lazy' as they...

Motorised 2 port valve; what has slowed it?

I'm seeing a drift into what physicists call "arm waving". If electric motors lose torque over time, it is down to a physical change - like magnets getting weaker or coils shorting out. But magnets don't get weaker (unless made to explicitly do so) and this is a motor running twice a day in a...

Motorised 2 port valve; what has slowed it?

? First I've ever heard about it. Do you have a source for that info? If it is the case, then Electric Car owners are going to be up in arms.

Motorised 2 port valve; what has slowed it?

I can well believe the new valve is faster. But that is the point. WHY is it faster - or - WHY has the old one become slower ? On the old one, there is no visible sign of wear on the ball. I can see no obvious degradation of the old unit at all.

Motorised 2 port valve; what has slowed it?

Yes, that is what happens with both the old & new units. Those are the springs the motor has to work against to operate the valve when powered up; the springs close it when powered down. How does that help with understanding about what has changed with valve aging ?

Motorised 2 port valve; what has slowed it?

The reasons I'm puzzled is that the main opposition to the motor turning are the built-in springs (the main activation lever is very easy to turn) But springs don't get stronger with age - if anything the opposite. Or the motor torque has dropped - but why, when it remains totally clean, dust...

Motorised 2 port valve; what has slowed it?

Thanks for the response, Johntheo5. The 12.5 sec was 'visually', plus I can see the lever pressing down on the contact switch and could hear it click (which is how I stopped the timing) As it happens, my Samsung system doesn't use that contact closure at all - all those extra wires are left...

Motorised 2 port valve; what has slowed it?

I have a Samsung Air Source Heating system, which been throwing a E911 error after 6 years of working fine. The 911 error is nominally "insufficient flow". Open Fernox magnetic filter and am amazed how beautifully clean the circulating fluid is. Look at the flow gauge and note is in the...

    Ideal Icos m3080 blowing fuses

If you look at the thread I cited, you'll find that experienced/conscientious engineers were unaware that this could occur, or that opening up the burner on an annual service was now recommended. The engineer who just put it back together was similarly ignorant, despite being very...

    Ideal Icos m3080 blowing fuses

Thought I'd come back to report that the icos 33080 is now working again. It was rather worse than it appeared. When replacing the fan harness, I looked for where the cable should be attached to the case, and noted a plastic clip top left of the case which had been charred. I also found the...

    Ideal Icos m3080 blowing fuses

Thanks again. Replacement pcb now here. I have extracted the fan harness and that is the source of the short to earth. The wires had melted together around a section where a cable tie was bunching them together. I'm working at the replacement. A couple of queries about it. Seeing...

    Ideal Icos m3080 blowing fuses

No water drips - totally dry, very clean, no corrosion. My measurement for the resistance from the ignition electrode to earth gave open circuit at the disconnected spark connector plug - which is what I would expect. Onboard PCB problems are under warranty, so I'm not going there.

    Ideal Icos m3080 blowing fuses

Being as I had to get on, I went ahead and ran up the PCB with only the mains input connected (all else disconnected). It blew the onboard mains fuse immediately. The seller is exchanging the PCB. But I do need to bottom out the red fan line being a short to earth in the cable run between...

    Ideal Icos m3080 blowing fuses

As I said, if it's inside the PCB covering, that is under warranty. Given that, opening it up would be unwise.

Both. Same result (tested at the plug that would go into the PCB).

Static (DC) resistances with multimeter: DC gas valve: 3.95 kΩ Overheat thermostat: ~0Ω Control Thermistor 25.9 kΩ Flue Thermistor 22.7 kΩ Fan 107Ω (No measurements made across combinations of yellow/pink/black lines as I don't know what I'm putting the MM test...

Thanks again. Will do, plus check as many resistances as possible. Apart from the main 110 Ω on the fan (blue-red), anything else to look for on the other 3 pins (are they fan motion sensing related?) All the others look straightforward to test. Am happy with external...

Thanks for the helpful response. Static DC resistances (Multimeter readings) are: L-E 4.3 MΩ N-E 5.4 MΩ L-N 72kΩ which don't immediately ring alarm bells. As for water on OH stat - if you mean external liquid, no both the Control Thermistor & Overheat thermostat are...
