The supply comes in from the street at the bottom. The larger, RH black box supplies the GF flat. The middle supplies the white meter and then the 1st floor flat (my flat). The left one feeds the stair lights, and is unmetered.

18mm plywood subfloor with 450mm joist centres?

Is 18mm plywood strong enough to use as a new subfloor in a Victorian flat where the joists are at approx 450mm centres (joists are approx 80mm thick), and every edge would be supported? I'd lay boards in same direction as joists, and cut boards lengthways such that both long edges were over...

Repoint 100+ year old internal brick wall?

That's a good idea. It would also have the advantage of levelling wall since part if it has new mortar over a bricked up fireplace. Only issue would be not knowing there the centre of the bridge are for drilling holes for the battens. Ian

Repoint 100+ year old internal brick wall?

Hi, I have stripped two rooms in a Victorian flat back to joists and brick in order to insulate, re-wire etc. There are 4 brick walls that were previously plastered. My preference is to batten the walls, and plasterboard over the battens, rather that dot-n-dab plasterboard. That way, its...

alternative to fibre glass insulation for loft???

I've used Thermafleece recently for my loft. Two layers of 140mm thickness each. Nice to work with. Doesn't irritate. It's expensive though. Several times the price of rockwool.

OSB3 vs Ply vs floor boards - Please help!!!

22mm ply plus laminate is also what I plan to use to replace old Victorian floorboards in w bedrooms. Joists are about 450mm apart. The 22mm ply is not a stock item in my local timber merchant, but they say they can easily order it in.

    Natural Insulation

Thermafleece is approx the same as rock wool. Both are approx half as effective as PIR. I think the minimum depth of rhermafleece is 100mm. The approx equivalent to 100mm PIR would be approx 200mm. It's a bugger to cut though, if you need to fit it between joists that are an odd size. Someone...

    Replacing the odd floor boards

I used 25mm plywood to replace broken boards in my flat. The advantage of ply is that it won't warp over time, and it lets you get a screw closer to the edge.

Suspended wooden floor. Insulation vs gap filling

It will be very hard, if not impossible, to fill every gap. And without that, the room is likely to feel very draughty. Checkout the Restoration Couples videos on YouTube ... they lifted the boards and insulated and draughtproofed before relaying them. Alternatively ... plyboard to to give a...

    Cutting wool insulation

any tips for cutting 140mm wool insulation. Saw doesn't work. Bread knife doesn't work. Sharp kitchen knife just about works, but takes ages and is really hard work! I have 40 570mm wide rolls I need to cut down to 420mm wide :-(

Lifting whole T&G floor in victorian house

Good points from jobandknock .... it was nailed with cut clasp nails through the corner of the tongue at every joist. Most nails came up with the boards. Some where left in the joists. Floorboards are approx 137x27mm pitch pine .... fairly standard for Victorian properties in Edinburgh. Max...
