The entire point of my post was to point out that large drives can be purchased relatively cheaply not to endorse Seagate. I didn't even look at the manufacturer. Having said that, I generally use Western Digital But I've recently had a newish 1Tb WD drive giving constant bad block errors...

What AronSearle told you is 100% correct. Just ring up Microsoft and they will ask for the key. If it's a Retail version they will re-activate. They might even re-activate an OEM version. The only way you'll find out is ring them up.
