Well if it was me painting on a previously glossed surface I would sand the surface LIGHTLY ....just to give it a key........then zinser or similar primer , primer undercoat ......then top coat

I would use a proper primer over varnish , not just acrylic Zinser Bin, 123 , Crown PX3 or 4 etc

If you have zinser 123 use that as a primer .....as its a good primer ....if it's hanging around .....even if you have sanded You can use water based primer undercoat if you like but if the zinser 123 is there, use that
