    Garden wall footings in sand

We live on a sand dune. The footings for the extension are (mostly) 600w x 300d, with mesh. When I built that, I did the garden block wall footing 200w x 150d. It's still standing, and is considerably more than was there on the previous wall from the 50s which was fine - it was more like a...

    Backbox fitting

Currently about £200. I got some sort of fluke deal on Amazon years back for just over £100.

    Backbox fitting

I have one of these, and it is very very good. Instead of all the dust getting airbourne with a grinder, it drops out the bottom of the black bit. I've managed to line up the vacuum cleaner pipe under it, and made very little mess. I found the square cutters not so good, and generally used...

    6mm backer boards on floor

No, I was half asleep! I'm using Wediboard.... my bad!

    6mm backer boards on floor

Surprised at no washers, I found screws went through the boards fairly easily when doing the walls. I guess adding them won’t do any harm….?!

    6mm backer boards on floor

Is screwing the backer board down with washers not enough, and adhesive is required, too? I've heard mixed opinions over the years....

    Bitumen corrugated roofing sheets

a thick bead of stixall, or sticks like, all the way across the top over the asbestos section. Could do the side seam if you want. I'd probably still use screw fixings through the asbestos...... it's the lowest risk of asbestos, so just wet it a bit first, and drive the screw in.

What's your wall chaser of choice?

I got hold of a Hilti wall chaser, and connected it to my Henry hoover (Buying a 3m hose, and cutting the attachment end off). It does create some dust, but sealing each room up as I worked on it was quite successful. I then used an Armeg chasing chisel to quickly remove the channel, and used...

    Oversite Question

The oversite can just be some blinding concrete onto the dirt below - it's only there really to keep it 'tidy'. I'd expect radon protection would be within the floor structure, not the sub floor? The subfloor would usually be ventilated, so radon wouldn't be an issue.

Joist hangers too big for joists?

Just plane it….. I cannot imagine a scenario where you wish you hadn’t made the floor flatter. You may not notice it by eye, but if you have a hard floor things roll around. I put a level all around the last one I laid, and got it as flat as I could. I spent as much time getting the tools set...

Joist hangers too big for joists?

Plane it now. It will take a few minutes, vs trying to fix it later if you do find it noticeable.

Using Loft Circuit for Split AC In Bedroom

MHRV ducting is nowhere near large enough to be able to provide cooled air, so yes an air-con unit would be required for what you want. With a split system, the outdoor unit is going to use the majority of the power, the unit inside the bedroom is going to use very little (Except possibly in...

Tanking a shower area against tray

I still havent done this job... may be swayed..... I though the objective was that if water got behind the tiles, it should re-appear in the tray and not below it? Silicone has a habit of shrinking or otherwise failing over time?

Creating a shadow gap at bottom of wall

Leave it be for a few months. Then once it's all smashed up by the vacuum cleaner, simply pop a skirting board over it.

Connecting toilet that has a 15mm connection, not 1/2inch

I think I've sussed it, with you guys suggestions and some thought. I was being silly.... trying to connect a push fit cap connector. The internals of the connector foul the thicker inners of the cistern inlet. I'll get a toilet flexi that's standard, and all should be well. Rookie plumbing.....

Connecting toilet that has a 15mm connection, not 1/2inch

The cistern doesn't have a 1/2BSP, I tried one of them, slightly too small. But the nut from a 15mm compression elbow fitted perfectly. Not there to get a picture today sadly, but 1/2 and 15mm look the same? The cistern has a 15mm thread coming from the bottom, and coming out of the wall is...

Connecting toilet that has a 15mm connection, not 1/2inch

Hi, I have a new Duravit concealed back-to-wall toilet. It has a 15mm supply connection, not a 1/2" (Experience so far was European items still use 1/2). I say 15mm, the nut from a 15mm elbow fits it perfectly, but of course measuring it is something like 19mm. The other end is a Hep2O 15mm...

Tanking a shower area against tray

Hi all, I am fitting a shower tray soon, and will tank the Wedi boarded walls. What's the usual way to seal the tanking to the tray? Do I paint to the edge and over by a few mm, to be covered with the tiles. Or do I use some of these online kits I've seen, that stick to the wall and have a...

    2 x 2G backbox question

On the plate shown, it looks roughly right to me.\ As @ebee says they can be ground down, or if not enough gap, an extra nut or washers used. A nice rigid fitting with those.
