    Bricklaying on your own

Ian, why is your boss' avatar a close up of the hulk being squeezed out of an arse crack?

What to buy... what to buy?

Makes sense, I think the s40 diesels circa 2008 used a pug engine? I thought the s60/v70 from the early d5 times were always Volvo lumps, though I'm not sure if that's still true for the modern ones / d3 etc

    Sticking vinyl floor to

daz; I didn't quite get the part where you said to replace/overboard the engineered wood, with plywood (which is itself, engineered wood) ?!

How to secure floating floor on beam and block floor

Ps; chapters seems to have mentioned porcelain/ceramic style tiles a few times, but I don't think they're the kind of tiles mark306 meant.. Mark, I don't see much point in going crazy insulating your floor's topside; you don't have underfloor heating, and a floor is not a huge heat loss path...

Insulating slopping roof - who has done it?

It will largely be a wasted effort, tbh. There's no way you'll get an adequate airtight seal between the celotex's and the plasterboard, so rather pointless. Use a magnet to mark out where the existing fixings are then fix a new bit of insulation backed plasterboard to the sloping section...

Planning to do my own plastering any tips?

First, I'd recommend deciding whether you're plastering or painting

    Can't reply in a thread

If you hit F12 to open the developer tools, do you see any errors in the JavaScript console, or in the network tab indicating here was a server error while posting your response?

    Bricklaying on your own

I have to ask; why do we care if the brick at this end of the course is a stretcher, and at the far end (umpteen metres away) is a half?

I think you may be suffering from a bit of premature congratulation there ..

    Island worktop size

So no dedicated recording box needed with that (just been looking at packages on ebay)- is the in-camera software good enough to start recording/taking stills when motion is detected, and just dump them on a file/ftp server? Is the lens angle adjustable?

What to buy... what to buy?

Last time my mother had her S40 diesel serviced, they recharged some canister of additive (?) inside the fuel tank, at some horrific cost. They told her to make sure she runs the tank as low as possible then refuel it to the brim, because the device detects the addition of fuel, but it doesn't...

    Mk1 Audi TT, woman's car?

Either hand him the cash and say "this is for you in case I don't come back, or bend it" then go for your test drive. Sign a waiver that any speeding tickets between times X and Y are yours. If he wants to come with you on the test drive, to check you're not going to wring the nuts off it then...

Which joint would be stronger, tension/compression stress..

I'm thinking a 400mm scarf on a 50mm timber (1:8 ratio) with screws at 200mm and 300mm. The downside I have with a stepped scarf is I need to do this joint 100 times (so at least 150 cuts) and it'll take forever if the cuts change direction.. If I make it a simple scarf that goes to nothing at...

What to buy... what to buy?

I've had several autos, no problems, and I'd be more reassured that an auto was going to carry on working if I could see the service schedule had been kept to, than a manual (given that a manual trans life expectancy is very much down to the human driver element: you just can't know how much...

Not getting paid and paying for materials?

Indeed, most building supply places, from "trade account only" merchants to Wickes/BnQ will deliver. Most "fence posts direct" internet places are just a front end web store (possibly run by a housewife from her front room) for a larger merchant or manufacturer that will that will drop-ship all...

At what point does half a day become a full day

Just before Christmas, I got a guy in to do some boarding and plastering. He stopped on a few hours more on a couple of evenings to get the job finished before Christmas Eve even though I said he didn't have to. I paid him what he asked for (a day rate based on the number of days, omitting the...

Lady wants kitchen work which I can't do by myself?

if he's anything of a teacher, he'll know that hints go wrong and lessons are learned. It's only a mistake if you do it twice! What have you got to lose by asking? By all accounts you're giving away the job anyway so if he says yes, you're not going to make a lot on it. If he says no, you'll...

What to buy... what to buy?

I disagree on the mileage thing. If I were looking at two identical 3 year old diesel cars, one with 10k miles (one little old lady owner) and one with 50k miles (one sales rep owner) I'd choose the 50k one every time. Modern diesels benefit far more from having done a lot of easy miles on a...

Which joint would be stronger, tension/compression stress..

suppose I have two pieces of 2x2 that I want to join (like a butt join on the 2x2 end) in a manner that will resist an applied tension/compression along the full length of the 2x2. There's a bit of shear, but mainly tension/compression.. Lacking a finger jointer or any similar tool, i'm limited...
