    light problem upstairs

Sounds like you've got a loose connection somewhere, either at a ceiling rose, a switch, or a hidden junction box. Start off checking the terminals are tight on any of these you find, in the area where the hammering was taking place.

adding a loft light from a socket junction box

Are you sure it is a ring final :?: Although ring finals are not against the reg's, in Ireland radials are the norm. If it is a radial it should be protected with a, 16A or 20A mcb(etc.) and spurring of it should not be a problem.

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

The face plate of the switch must be earthed, if the back box is sunk into the wall, the earth wire from from face plate to back box, can be omitted. So yes you've got it right, moving the earth from the backplate to the faceplate.

The safety valves are designed...

ford focus 06 tdci won't start unless full of fuel

Sounds like you've fitted the wrong fuel filter, some have a valve in to stop the fuel, draining back into the tank when the engine is not running, i'm guessing you've fitted one without, and it's got to suck the fuel back up the line, after it's been left for a while.
