Cold Rads Downstairs when hot water on.

Hi, My CH system works fine (i.e. all rads up and downstairs are hot) most of the time. However, when i run a bath, the rads go cold downstairs. The rads downstairs only heat back up again until when the HW cylinder is back at the correct temperature. I understand that when the...

Rough Price for Electric Work - Part P

The new unit is for the entire house. But the old fusebox only has 1 ring, 1 lighting and 1 cooker fuse. Oh well. Time to get another quote. Thanks.

    Cylinder Very hot at top.

Thanks for that. The system does not have a seperate room thermostat but i was thinking off installing one now everything seems to be working. I'll put the stat in the front room and remove the TRV from the front room rad. Thanks again.

    Cylinder Very hot at top.

arrr that makes a bit more sense. I always thought it was odd that all the rads had TRV's. Do you think it is a good idea to change one rad to a manual valve?(assuming i keep the stop cock closed)

    Cylinder Very hot at top.

Sorry chaps. Let me give you my apologies. The HW was very hot due to a previous central heating problem i resolved in the day. Once i drained the cyl and let it refill, it is now the same temp all over. The reason this was getting so hot is quiet interesting though. When i changed my...

    Cylinder Very hot at top.

richardhill84 - if your water is too hot, why not turn down the thermostat? If you can't hear the thermostat click on and off as you turn the dial, then it's very likely to be faulty. The thermostat is down to 55 but the water is more like 85. Aso, FYI, the water in the cylinder will...

    Cylinder Very hot at top.

No water running through the overflows. Hot water is clean Rads are NOW fine. (see below) As a bit of background, i had a problem for the last two weeks where my downstairs rads would not work if the upstairs were on. I fixed this by changing the pump, DIY powerflush, balancing the rads...

    Cylinder Very hot at top.

Thanks. The cylinder does have a immersion heater but it doesn't work and is not plugged in. It is pretty old and still has a red jacket on it!!!!! Like you say, initially the top of the cylinder would be the hottest and then the rest of the cylinder when heat up when the water in the coil...

    Cylinder Very hot at top.

It's that hot that i can't put my finger under it for more than a second or two. It also seems to make opening and closing the taps harder. The stat is currently set to 55. I have just felt the cylinder again now and it feels almost tepid where the stat is but still very hot at the top...

    Cylinder Very hot at top.

Hi, My hot water is getting very (scalding) hot even though the hot water cylinder thermostat is set at 55-60 degrees. If i feel the cylinder where the thermstat is placed (about a third of the way up) the cylinder is warm/hot (I guess about 55-60 degrees). However, if i feel the...

    Cold downstairs radiators mystery??

When i fitted the MV, i set the heating to ON and the water to OFF and then felt the pipe on the cylinder side of the MV. It didn't get hot which is correct. I think the hot water is a bit red herring as we never have the HotWater on constant anyway so the water we used to feel was...

    Cold downstairs radiators mystery??

But i had the same problem before i changed the Motorised valve. The reason i changed the MV was because the Hot Water Cyclinder was getting hot even when the Hot Water was switched off on the programmer. The old MV appeared to be working when i took the top of it but i think the valve was...

    Cold downstairs radiators mystery??

Thanks for the reply. Yes, when I replaced the 3-Way Motorised Valve i changed the complete unit (valve and head). It was a sunvic 2701 and is now a Honeywell model. As far as i know, the bathroom rad is plumbed in like the rest off the rads. i have never noticed it come on just when the...

    Cold downstairs radiators mystery??

Thanks but I changed the pump last weekend but the problem persists. I have read through all the forum posts with similar probs and people seems to suggest the following: 1. Turn down the Locksheild valves upstairs. - (I've done it) 2. Drain the CH system, run the water through until...

    Cold downstairs radiators mystery??

Thanks for the reply. However, i'm doubtful that it is sludge because I have taken every radiators off in th elast 4 years and flushed them out. I even drained the CH system a couple of weeks ago and left the water running through it until it came out clear. Could it be an airlock or...

    Cold downstairs radiators mystery??

I'm really scratching my head now. I tried turning each upstairs locksheild valve down to 1/4th or 1/8th turn and a little bit of hot water got to the rads downstairs but nothing major. I the process off playing with the system, I realised that the motorised valve was knackered as the...
