Urgent help needed on wood paint/stain

Your post isn't too clear to me but if I understand you correctly, you wanted it light oak. Now that couldn't be done because you've already got mahogany stained woodwork so it couldn't be lightened. The only way forward if you want the paint off is trial and error with a heat gun and shave...

    Papering over mist coated wall

Yes Rob, I mostly agree but sometimes you just know it needs lining and sometimes you know it's a waste of time and money. There is one instance that happened to me and it's a staircase. They didn't want it lined first so I sized it and papered. It was one of those brittle, shiny surfaced...

    Papering over mist coated wall

Not my way :!: Not saying that it's no good, it's probably very good indeed, but Lining is the perfect base. FROM Graham & Brown website - When should I use lining paper? We would always recommend using lining paper as the perfect base on which to hang wallpaper.

    Papering over mist coated wall

Papering over lining paper is the best possible surface to paper over. That's probably why you'll see it on the instructions of the paper and it's wise to follow them in case of any problems. If you were to have problems papering over vinyl matt, you'd be snookered if the manufactures make an...

    Another option: Line it first.

Mist coat coming off with masking tape

I've already said over plaster that was mist coated. Perhaps it will always happen if you do this. Point is.. best not use masking tape or use extremely low tack because it will probably happen again.

Mist coat coming off with masking tape

I've never put masking tape over plaster that was mist coated over a month ago. I doubt whether any other painter and decorator or plasterer has either. Anybody :?:

    wallpaper peeling at edges

Couple of choices -- You could mix a small amount of paste, gently lift the edges with a filling knife or scraper, brush the paste inside the gap and damp sponge it down. I would just do the above as I mentioned but using emulsion instead of paste then sponge down.

    Damp Patches

Oil based undercoat , but don't use red if your ceiling is going to be finished in white, or vice versa.

    sloping ceiling

Depending on the paper, pattern, thickness, match etc, you may have to do it in three. Was ceiling, slope and wall.

It looks like my dentists drill :D So.. wait a bit .. You're going to paper some of the ceiling.. as if it was the wall - Starting from the floor .. I'm nearly there :? Is it a Laura Ashley :?:

    Macphersons Gloss

A lot of the lads round my way use it as a big firm always used to use it and the shop supplies it. I've only used black lately but... I got a call from a woman that had this young guy round to do a lot of painting and she wanted me to make it right. He was 1 of these guys that had practised...

    protecting a new door

Cheers ~Terence :D We here that are painters and decorators, are notoriously slow at catching on to any kind of new products. In this instance, I'm talking water based varnish. I didn't used to use it but I could see the DIYers around mel, using it with excellent results. Used it a few...

    protecting a new door

Ah. The old "grain" issue eh. Highly unlikely just using a damp rag or sponge. I'm not suggesting it should be immersed in a bath for a week. Just a damp wipeover.

    protecting a new door

Why would you not use a damp lint free rag or sponge (if it is glue) ?
