    Greenfly

'Aphidius colemani' parasitic wasp. Best used in a glass house environment, as to restrict area, and possible escape to next doors plants :x They occur naturally outdoors in summer, however can be killed off by using 'spray on insecticides' so a good reason to go organic! Marigolds, thats...

    My Laburnam tree died

B4 you plant up your new one, you need to asses why the old bush died! This cause, can be of many things, position to sun, soil type (p.H), depth of soil, disease etc, etc. Try replanting it first, in a new position. If no new growth, then assume the worst! If no obvious signs of disease, It...

    Greenfly

The soapy water method is all about making life difficult for aphids, the film residue helps to dissuade them to attack your plants. You will need to wash the herbs off well before using, other than that you'll be blowing bubbles  Try looking up companion planting on the RHS web site...

    Play House

Don't forget, when your kids grow-up, and you want to sell the house, an easy to dis-assemble house will sell better. However they make good quiet hideaways from teenage daughters

    lawn advice

You can win with lawns 'sandwell', It's all down to how much effort you are prepared to invest in your lawn. The best solution is to hire a turf remover, remove old turf, add new better soil, and perhaps improve drainage, then re-lay new turf. However all this cost money, time, and effort...

Fence to replace brick wall - security required... ideas?

Thermo I'm getting worried about you, up at 7.00am on a Sunday morning  diybristol try 'close board' type fencing, it's strong if well installed, and If height restrictions apply as Thermo said, you can always add trellis to the top to increase height and deter climbers. Buy good...

    Heritage paving

I was going to say 'I'm in agreement with Thermo' but I didn't want your head to swell too much

    Heritage paving

You don't tell us what slabs the first quote was for. A bog standard 350 x 350mm cheap slab cost from 79p. Heritage slabs are top quality, and harder to lay, due to natural looking shape, heavier and thicker. You also don't mention the patio sizes. If it's the usual 3 x 3 meters, and your...

    Qualcast Mower

How old is it? If new take it back. I know this sound obvious, but can you not permanently fix it back on? Personally being Qualcast, I'd drive down my road until I found the nearest skip!

    lawn advice

You don't have to rip up your old lawn, just put in place some drainage system. The most expensive is perforated pipe, running to a soakaway. Or for cheapness just 'Herringbone' style French drain, that's gravel buried under a layer of inverted turf, then sandy topsoil, then the turf. There...

    Will Willow Weep?

Best to move it in winter when still 'dormant' as bare root, however you could sill move it now, be quick though, as it will be in bud soon, depending where you live/weather. Leave it too late and you'll have to take it with a ball of soil.

    Mushrooms in lawn

There's been some sound advice posted on this subject, so not mutch to add. Your best bet for a cure will be to improve drainage for a start, and as others have said, pick them b4 you mow. Most gardeners want to add organic matter to their garden, you unfortunately may have too take it away...

    Plant for shade

nematode (eelworm) are great, one dose contains 6 million nematodes which seek out slugs and enter there bodies. Once inside they release a deadly infectious bacteria, which breaks down there insides to soup. All this takes up to 5 days. What a way to die......eaten alive from inside, as you...

Sand for lawn aeration - sharp or not?

Why not hire an 'aerator' from your local hire shop, job's done in minutes. Block paving sand is kiln dried sharp sand, I've used it on a lawn with no problems, even though it contains small amounts of lime.

Where can I get a good quality hose?

Try 'Screwfix' site, look for there yellow builders hose. Bought mine in 1999, used daily (even in winter), been run over countless times, even got trapped under a skip for a week once. Still looks like new now, no holes or cracks. Best hose I ever bought.

    Dwarf conifers: pruning

No they don't grow as fast as 'Leylandii' Why prune them if you want to keep them dwarf? The problem is, if you prune the centre 'leader shoot' the conifer will start to bush out. The 'brown patches' could be just lack of sunlight, or at worst 'Red spider mite'. As a rule a conifer takes...

    Bathroom Plants

Try Aspidistra 'cast iron plant' or Dragon tree (don't know Latin name!)for good effect. Ivy will do well. I went through 3 yuccas in 5 years, all died so I gave up :(

Trellis from recycled polystyrene - where to buy?

    Patio/Drive Prices

To be 'Marshalls registered' is a good thing, but not essential. Why not ring a few landscape companys, better still ask around for recommendations. The price seems about right for the work, as 'nstreet' said a lot of the cost is labour. With any block paved drive, foundation is critical, or...

    Killing Ivy on a house

Agree with 'nstreet' and 'jingles', the only way to remove Ivy from rendering is with a wire brush and elbow grease. Even then don't expect to remove it completely :( "Poison ivy, poison ivy" (sorry got carried away  )
