Shuttering or other dry cement mix for shed base?

For an 8x6 shed I wouldn't bother with cement at all. A bit of mot wacked down, layer of sand to level, then slabs. It'll outlast the shed and the materials will be easy to remove/recycle at some later date if required.

Which concrete mix for a small drain repair/fix?

I used the drain repair mortar to patch up the hopper at my father's house a few years back. Its held nicely. Was quite good stuff to work with. Held its shape and was fairly sticky. https://www.diy.com/departments/u-can-waterproof-repair-mortar-5kg-tub/237084_BQ.prd

Using a mouse with long wire

10m will be fine over USB. You can get USB face plates. Just use decent quality USB cables not pound shop specials. The face plates are usually just short extension leads so it'll all plug together.

Any electronics people? 12v output and 10v input

I'd use a FET. You can get little boards on eBay. They'll take a range of inputs, easy to wire up and will happily drive the solenoid. You'll need a separate power supply to make the 12v. This sort of thing, this a 5v input...

    Garage foundations

As you have now read, its 2.5m max if any part of the building is within 2m of a boundary. And as mentioned brick or wood makes no difference. Planning permission may be granted, especially if you only want to go a little higher. A few hundred quid on the cost of the project for a bit more...

What is the cheapest replacement for greenhouse glass panel

I got a load of used greenhouse glass from Gumtree. It was £1 a pane. I think he wanted £2 for bigger pieces but we did a deal on a job lot. There was also some on eBay when I was looking. You'll need to do some cutting but that is easy enough. If you really don't mind what it is and it doesn't...

Using old bricks as hardcore for paving

I spent about half an hour getting nowhere breaking up my brick and other waste before giving up. Hired a crusher and it made short work of it and produced perfect MOT. Quite satisfying to do as well. I had a bit more and made sub bases for a patio and two sheds. It wasn't cheap to hirehbut was...

What are these metal straps on a breeze block wall.

Bet these guys wished they had a few fitted https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/high-winds-tear-roofs-eight-15950539?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=group_walesmain

Mortar for lime and rubble wall

Need to do some repairs to the roof of an old building. There is a big bit of roofing missing so I need to do a bit of pointing and fit a new wall plate before I tackle the roof. Its rubble stone with lime mortar. Quite rustic. What mortar mix do I want and what lime should I buy? Any tips...

    Paving Bricks to Lawn

No need for a skip if its paving bricks laid on sand. Someone will happily take the bricks (and any excess sand). Freecycle or Facebook marketplace and it'll go straight away. They will probably help you lift it too. Same for any paving slabs. No need for any of it to go to land fill

Building regs for a potting shed

You say its clearly over 30m2 but the 30m2 is for the internal floor area. If those dims are external and depending on wall thickness you are only a smidge over. You could make it a little smaller to be exempt or just chance it. That said if the construction is fairly standard you shouldn't...

    Garage base

Are you planning to lower it so you can then put raised decking on top? Why not just pave it? Much less work now, less waste and less maintenance in the future

    Tapeing plasterboard question

I think woody is being facetious and saying turn it over and treat it like non tapered board. I know a couple of pros who don't like tapered edge. Personally I much prefer it as a DIYer. You can still use the paper tape on the short edges. You need to make sure they are well aligned so they need...

    Inbuilt Microwave Ventilation

Joining LED strips - what gauge wire

Depends how long a length you cut and the length of cable. Those 5050 x 30 LEDs will draw a bit over half an amp per meter. I'd do the calcs for 1 amp per meter to give some slack. There are calculators online, here is one for example https://www.wirebarn.com/Wire-Calculator-_ep_41.html but it...

Brushless Combi Drill or Brushed Twin Kit?

Pretty much agree with what blup said. A better quality single unit will be better. I'm sure the dewalt is fine but if you can stretch to a makita lxt then its worth it. It'll allow you to pick up other bare tools cheaply as well.

Insulation board for circular saw (cutting sheet)

I use a sheet of MDF. Usually the packing piece that comes with sheet timber I've had delivered. Better finish than propping the sheet up and cutting air (although that method is good if the finish is less critical)

    Shower tray waste without access?

I fitted the trap first. With some careful measurement and a dry fit to check it was in the right place. There's a few mm of movement in the pipework to allow the final fit. It was a bit awkward to tighten from one side only but not impossible Mine is over the utility room so it wouldn't be a...

    Bits for a Drill/Driver

I quite like them. They aren't the best but they are pretty good. Given the price you can chuck one away as soon as it shows any signs of wear. You also need decent screws, for example ones that come free with anything are usually rubbish. If you do want really good bits then try some Wera (but...

    Best DIY soldering iron

A basic Antex one will do the job and likely last forever. If you fancy something a bit nicer this is very good https://cpc.farnell.com/tenma/21-10115-uk/soldering-station-digital-esd/dp/SD01738 and not that expensive for what you get. Heats up very quickly. Had mine about 8 years and I'm very...
