I bet your order book is full with your customer service ethos By the way this is a web forum. No-one on here is a customer. We are all almost anonymous, no transactions, advertising, pitching for business etc.. Or to help you understand, try watching Father Ted explaining to Father...

You should have disclosed that information first because it changes things. Unless carrying his own registration, or doing it for the firm, the work is illegal, uninsured and you are a willing accessory. I wouldn't ask for any more help, seems like you deserve each other.

All things being considered? I suggest no things being considered. Are you supplying him with a vehicle, equipment, training and all other expenses as well as a regular supply of employment? because if not it's not a grand for labour is it? If I bake and sell bread and make enough for what...

    new boiler advice

Atag, Intergas, Woodburner, link-up equipment, buffer tanks + know how & skills to successfully install. Broken boiler - Glow Worm 24ci

No, I think the OP is better off with cover. For all the moaning the public do about the profits/tax avoidance of big corporations they always seem smugly satisfied giving them money for nothing every month. Enter an independent who dares to make a crust and they'll demand his balls for...

How much will these works cost?

Find someone to quote it for you. In my opinion, asking anyone to waste their time pricing you on a forum is an insult. They give free advice as this can be quoted off the top of their head. You want someone to sit there calculating. They aren't going to be doing the job.

Expensive boilers have expensive parts too. There is no pattern and any cheap parts today is no guarantee they won't rise dramatically over the boiler's lifetime.

    Vaillant or Viessmann?

In the context of your post, hard water means nothing. The only water both boilers contact is what goes through your heating system. Hard water only affects the water you consume at the taps and outlets.

Then your issue is that the man is incompetent and therefore a rip off at any price. However even an expert will charge higher prices than you'll find on the web.

I'm sure if whatever you cost to employ was made public, someone will put pressure to kick you out of a job.

    Toilet recommendation

Leaks will be down to installation and not knowing which parts of the cheap fittings pack to use or bin. In a lifetime in the trade, I have only once encountered a new WC with a casting leak. If only customers were half as diligent researching their workman as their brand.
