    I have said before on here and will show again for the benefit of others. Back in 1962 I was taught that the origin was from the 1940s when sockets were indeed called Plugs and the bit on the top was the Plugtop.

    Spare part for soldering iron

    If your not going to change the tip every five mins. then the locking ring off an early cycle valve fits. It has a slightly different thread but goes on quite a way, then fit washer or wrap wire around tip to tighten on. Bingo!
