Well, very interesting shower conversation. Just to clarify we don't know when the electric shower was installed but it was before we moved into the house April 07. It stopped working in May 08 and it still hasn't been changed because we have discovered that our new consumer unit was installed...

To be fair the new kitchen ring is only for fridge/freezer, dishwasher and toaster/kettle, food mixer. The washer (and future dryer) are in a seperate room. I think the 20A is probably OK. I will give a progress update.

The electrician we may get to do the remedial works also told me that a pull cord may not be necessary. But the building control electrical inspection has said that it is NECESSARY and that the new consumer unit can not be signed off until it is done. Hopefully the electrician we get to do...

Last query- it seems that the building control electrician has commented that the 20A fuse for the new kitchen cicruit is too low. Is that right? Will it be a lot of hassle to change it?

Actually, Jason- about the shower pull cord. This whole thing first came up because we need a new shower. Doesn't the shower need a pull cord in the bathroom? Is it enough just to have a switch beside the consumer unit- down two flights of stairs?

I guess the issue is ours has been picked up and tested and all is well. But not clear that other customers will be informed.

Well, building control came our 2 weeks ago and one of their electricians arived the next day. They figured out which circuit was which on the consumer unit. The electrician seemed to have made up the fuses he used in the kitchen.... the new kitcken ring was documented on the kewtech...

Getting somewhere slowly! The charging twice was just to illustrate that I was told by C and O that every electrician charged about £100 for Part P work as a flat charge so it was to our advantage to get them to do all the work, rather than have some of it done in advance but it looks as if...

You'll note they also refer multiple times to the 'fuse box' rather than CU. Even I have picked up that lingo now:)

No the answer didn't really help:) I'm pursuing a civil claim whilst waiting to hear if they are doing criminal one. The details of errors in quotes to me are small fry in all of this.

But the pre-installation visit was not from a qualifed electrician! He did not notice that the existing CU did not have enough space for new circuits. Anyway. We have been ripped of whatever way you look at it. I'm just trying to work out if the quote is nonsense too and we could reasonably...

Quote came from Core and Ore 'pre-installation visit' - and from someone who is not a qualified electrician, which may be why he fails to notice that new CUs are needed. But the Part P/bonding quote seems to be standard with them.

So £140 seems a lot for a Part P cert then. I remember at the time of the quote we mentioned that since we knew the CU would have to be moved we had considered getting it done in advance but they said we would then incur 2 seperate Part P charges - one from first electrician and another from...

Uhm..... but is it normal to charge for Part P certification per se? I thought that if the electrician was able to self-certify then there should be no additional charge for certification as it is an obligation after doing the work. I can understand that if building control were to be involved...

On another note- the original quotation includes: "Part P Certificate(additional to test), & including-upgraded earth bonding to ciruit board £140" Is this normal?

Thank you to everyone for all your help. I will investigate how a possible breach of CDM may be pursued. Back to C and O and building control tomorrow. I suspect that Ikea's relationship with C and O is outside of CDM legislation but I may be wrong about that. OK.... back to the day job:)

Thank you:) Our mistake was to negotiate the £350 exchange with the contractors who tuned up on the door rather than C and O. So they managed to get away without giving us any receipts etc. I'm not sure why he didn't just add testing of the existing circuits onto the Kewtech form... didn't mean...
