    Painting new kitchen

We're currently having our kitchen extended and I'm planning for painting it prior to the kitchen being installed. I will be left with skimmed plasterboard, so obviously the first job is to prime the plaster with a mist coat, but do I need to pay over the odds for "kitchen" paint? The Mrs wants...

    Tomato Pollination.

Where are you in the UK? I'm in Lancaster and would happily have toms outside now, even outside a greenhouse. You may wish to acclimatise them by putting them outside during the day only for a week or two, but I never bother with that. As for the greenhouse side of things, I've never used one...

    Tomato Pollination.

Now that it's flowering you want to be feeding with Tomorite once a week or so, and generally keeping it well watered. As for pollination, you don't have to rely on insects really: just get a soft, small paintbrush (the type used for art not decorating!!) and brush the flowers lightly...

    Lawn going yellow

How often do you mow the lawn and how short do you crop it? At the start of the year you should mow long and gradually lower the blades to the length you want. This could be the cause of the browning. I had the same on my lawn last year. Using the above method this year has had a massive impact.

Lawn Help - I've been ripped off!

You've done a good job fixing that nightmare. Looks neat and tidy. The rain and sun will help. Get some good grass fertiliser on it too. Make sure it has potash in it. Most turf gets a good dose of the stuff while it's being grown, but as you can't vouch for the trade that supplied it, I doubt...

    Patchy appearance of tomato leaves

My guess it's "shock" as per post above. No matter how careful you are when repotting you will damage some roots. As a result the plant get quite enough water and you get slightly patchy leaves. It should work itself out in good time. One tip I use for growing toms is to grow spring onions...

Arrgghh - what have I drilled into?

And in future get a pipe/elec tester gadget and use it before drilling ;)

Give peas a chance. Maybe a section on growing peas for the keen gardeners?

Thanks for that. I'll give it a go when I've got the time and report back :)

New lawn just laid, how long till we can use it?

Agreed, stay off it as long as you possibly can. When mowing, don't mow too short - probably put the blade height at its highest setting.

Repurposing double glazing in the garage

I'm also saving the cost of the wood, as I have been given wood that is perfect for the job, but doesn't match what's already there.

Repurposing double glazing in the garage

Thanks for that - I'm pretty new to this whole diy lark :) I'm guessing it's a case of building the frame and then securing that to the garage, then fitting the window? Do you build the frame separately and then fit to the garage, or can you sort of build it in situ as you go...

Repurposing double glazing in the garage

The wooden frame around my garage window is rotten, and the glass is cracked so I'd like to replace it. It's a prefab concrete slab style garage. The current window frame is 1220x800mm. We're having the kitchen window replaced (upvc double glazing) as we're extending and the new window will be...

    Storing paints in shed/garages....

I'm no expert, but the way I see it, water based paints have water in them. In the cold the water freezes. As a result the pigments and so on suspended in them as an emulsion get forced out leaving you with the problem you described. So I put mine in the loft in a corner that's got lots of...

Screw a heavy wooden "fence panel" to concrete pos

My fence has block pillars instead of posts and so I've screwed battens to the blocks and then screwed the panels to that just using standard long wood screws. I would have thought you'll want to do something similar, although what you've made sounds pretty heavy to me. Is it? That might be a...

    Storing paints in shed/garages....

I store my paint in the loft as it's free from frost up there (in my house at least!!)
