    DIY rewiring and Building control

Excellent tip BAS.......believe new version out in a couple months. Think if you are a committed DIY'er why not go down to your local college and get a DISQ qualification. Teach you all the basics using books BAS mentioned plus the Regs and how to read them. A good investment if you move house...

    DIY rewiring and Building control

However ......Part P is an advisory document to help you comply with the building regs.....part p clearly points you in the direction of using BS7671 to comply with the building regs. Compliance with BS7671 also will satisfy a court you acted in a manner likely to satisfy EAWR 1989. Remember...

    DIY rewiring and Building control

Reading P156 of the Regs. Competency is sort of defined in a roundabout way. Compare Regs 610.3 and 610.5. In a way they are saying if you can do a verification you are competenn. Of course your ability to do an initial verification must hold up in a court of law. The bottom line is Part P is...

    DIY rewiring and Building control

Well I suppose you have to ask your council to test and provide certs to BS7671. Testing is carried out in stages.......some before work commences.....some during erection.........some on completion.....some after juicing up the circuit. Somebody has to do the tests in order to prove compliance...

They issue a completion certificate once they have received the (EIC)test certificates which have been completed by a 'competent person'

    Farewell, 16th Ed!

Incidentally passed my 17th upgrade this week (30Q's 1hour). Have had the new regs for only a fortnight. Now to spend the next couple of years trying to assimilate and understand it......Great bedtime reading NOT

    Farewell, 16th Ed!

Yes a sad farewell to the 16th. I was beginning to think I was finding my way round the 16th in a sort of 'competent' way. I agree with extra safety measures introduced by the 17th as this will surely cut the accident rate. However was p***ed off with a number of things. The change to basic and...

    cooker and hob installation

Correction.........Yes is OK according to P48 of said publication. Sounds like a BS3036 and not MCB so P45 does not apply

    cooker and hob installation

However if push comes to shove 6mm2 is acceptable. In the electricians guide to the building regs (green book by IEE) P45 this arrangement is listed under standard domestic circuits. They even say it is acceptable for cooker control unit with a socket and a run of up to 40m. Lots of new builds...

Ever felt you waste your time?

5 months back I did a consumer unit change. Modified a new consumer unit to be dual RCD split load, with 10ways left for circuits. I used up 7 ways. The client told me she wanted to change her gas cooker/hob to electric during the summer. It is a very small 3 bed house with 100Amp supply. Told...

    DIY rewiring and Building control

See Table 2 of this document http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/media/Building_Control_Charges_FormNov2.pdf notice that there are 2 charges for electrical work.....either £66 or £293.........most councils operate similar to this.

    DIY rewiring and Building control

I suspect you have fallen into a trap......see this thread http://www.diynot.com/forums//viewtopic.php?t=140424 . Most councils operate a 2 tier application. For £100 they would expect you to fill in the certs and send them off in order to get your compliance cert. Here we pay £66 for Building...

Or if you have the patience and skill drill it out with a 2mm drill

Have you tried unscrewing with a pair of pliers, it is obviously cross threaded.

    Part P & BS7671 Certificates

Building Control and their attitude to Part P differs slightly from Council to Council. Our Council is not as lenient as most. Firstly whenever you are the person carrying out the work you must be 'competent'. In Portsmouth to prove competency you have to do the following. Take your electrical...

Advice on CU change where switch drops are unearthed

Securespark....your advice about doing PIR or a detailed test before changing a CU is spot on. An absolute necessity. How many diyers change their boards and then can't understand why the RCD trips? I always check for segregation of circuits aswell as it is possible to find 2 circuits sharing...

Advice on CU change where switch drops are unearthed

Exactly Oharaf, the reason we come here is to draw knowledege from more experienced Sparks. I had a similar prob to you, moving a consumer unit from basement to ground floor. Personally not too happy at crimping so many cables so I bought an empty box like this one...
