    Why not wireless?

Ok eyedee assuming you want a bells only system i.e not monitored you have 3 viable options as far i'm concerned : Texecom, Scantronic, Pyronix. Pyronix is a slightly cheaper option but you get what you pay for. As for detectors id recommend Texecom or Optex. As for Patio door when you say shock...

New burglar alarm box / old devices?

I don't see any reason why you should have to replace the cabling too providing it is all OK. As for the panel take it to the antiques roadshow might be worth a few quid. Seriiously though install a new panel , bell , contacts and detectors and you should be fine. Don't touch the DIY sheds best...

    Why not wireless?

Welcome to the site mate. There are many pitfalls and reasons why wireless is despised by most on this site. The key ones being reliability e.g. batteries only lasting 6 months to a year, delays between one operation and another and interference. If you do a search on the site you ll see where...

    Keyfob or keypad?

Ten years old you don't have to worry bout it then mate. Only applies to new installations or if you had enough false alarms to lose your URN (Unique Ref NO) and you have to take remedial action to get it back. As long as you remember the code you'll be fine

    Keyfob or keypad?

John this is a change in regulations bought about by ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) a few years back . Basically there were too many monitored alarms that were false alarming and making them leave their doughnuts to get cold :D They decided on the keyfob idea for unsetting of...

Install Manuals - Do they come with the Device??

Yeah don't run paralell to mains if at all possible. It can cause some strange goings on. EMI electro magnetic interference cause by the magnetic field around mains cables. It can be a cause of false alarms.

    Linking Alarm Detectors

Anteaus sorry you are wrong. It is not standard installer practice to series contacts and PIR's in fact regulations advise against this. Installer's sometimes use same cable for a contact and PIR but at the panel end these are wired into seperate zones. Whilst not ideal this is perfectly...

    Hybrid wired/wireless (sigh!) alarms

The old pyronix systems were notorious for that it's the way the transformer is glued into the back box. Convince them on a upgrade and install a new wired sensor Surely there's a way of getting one cable out to a sensor ? Don't usually condone this but if needs be you could always go s u r f a...

    Internal Door Contact Problem?

Ian if you have two red wires that means there is a second contact somewhere else you'll probably find there are two cables going to the contact . Joining the red wires together should indeed show the system is closed. My advice is to twist the two reds together then shut all other internal...
