Is an uneven wall when plastered on brick acceptable?

Spot on Stevie!! Working/plastering from an accurate running screed will always give you a near perfect level, plumb wall, especially when things have to be fitted to fitted to it/ against it.

Behind the plaster coat it's like very crumbly sand

If it's as bad looking as you say, i'd remove the whole lot back to brick. Once you start messing about with that old sandy basecoat, you can sometimes open a can of worms. You said you had a penetrating damp problem that "hopefully" has been sorted. By removing all the old stuff, it gives you a...

Is an uneven wall when plastered on brick acceptable?

Exactly Roy. When I was a younger plasterer, most of our plastering was float and set, either sand cement and lime, or a browning and sand mix float coat,,, finished off the next day with Siraphite, probably one of the best plaster finishes ever. We learned how to do cement rendering...

Is an uneven wall when plastered on brick acceptable?

You wouldn't use little off cuts of wood dabbed all over the wall, the ones I use are about 16 inches long, strategically placed, and plumb, across the wall, using a string line, and placed to suit the length of a straight edge. Along the bottom of th wall is a wooden "ground", permanently fixed...

Is an uneven wall when plastered on brick acceptable?

Ok RP, So you have an old concrete block wall that has had all the plaster removed. The wall is 25/30feet long and 8'6" or so, high. The wall in many places is 3/4 of an inch or more, off the plumb. When a straight edge is placed across the blockwork along the length of the wall, it dips in and...

Is an uneven wall when plastered on brick acceptable?

Who's talking about 3mm of plaster? The man said his "wall was taken back to brick", you dont plaster that back out with 3mm of plaster, ROFL.. Have you honestly "never" used dots and string lines on brick/block, float and set walls, to form accurate screeds using a straight edge? hmm. There...

    Crack in corner wall

I've repaired a good few cracks like this. The way that I do it is this. Cut away about 5 or 6 inches of plaster all the way up the corner, on both the walls. Give the area a good brush down to remove all the dust and loose rubbish. Get some wire lath, cut a strip the height of the room, by...

Is an uneven wall when plastered on brick acceptable?

It's hard to say whether the 10mm dip will make any difference. It shouldn't be there at all. The kitchen fitters have said what they think, and I'd agree with them,, the wall should be straight. If things don't go right during the installation, because of this un-even wall, then the plasterer...

Is an uneven wall when plastered on brick acceptable?

Of course a plastered wall should be plumb and even. Any real plasterer worth his salt would know how to make a "float and set" plastered wall level, straight and plumb. A real plasterer would temporarily put wooden "dots" on each wall, and then make a plaster screed across the wall, from which...

Whats the best way to repair this crack?

It looks as though that crack is coming from the lintel, quite a common type of crack really. I'd do exacly what Roy says. Also, once you have it cut back and the wire lath/mesh is fixed in place, give the whole area a damp down/spray before you scratch coat. You could even brush on some pva...

    Tyrolean - Mixing my own

Good advice as usual Roy. Tony, "don't" dampen down the wall. As Roy said, you need the suction from the finished render. Another thing, this is a messy job, especially around windows, so make sure you cover up the glass. Sand will scratch glass very easily and ruin windows. Like Roy, I haven't...

Plasterboarding over Artex ceiling - Edges ?

Use a filler that goes solid after an hour or so. Here's what I would do. Mix up a small amount of the filler, not too wet..Get a 1" paint brush and "lightly dampen" the gap as you go, and using a scraper, push the filler into the gap. Continue doing this all around the ceiling line, keeping the...

    Solid lumps in wall

As Rochester Plasterer says, pictures would be very handy. What are the walls made of,, plasterboard, brick???

    Use of PVA

Exactly, especially when putting PVA onto a white/light surface. I use red food colouring. Another thing, always skim onto the pva while it's wet/tacky. If it dries too quickly, just roll on some more.

    Old plasterer

Great story,,, I can vouch that age is no barrier to a plasterer. Knowlege and experience comes with age, and health is the key.

    damage to plaster

Absolutely, well said G/ Biscuit. The PLASTERBOARD ceiling and walls have been DAMAGED by water. It doesn't matter what that the damage is, both should be re-placed. The ceiling is being replaced because it has been damaged, the wall/s should be replaced as well, because they too/the...

    damage to plaster

Trading Standards would advise you on the best way forward with your problem. Another thing too. You shouldn't have to do ANY painting/decorating etc. That should all be done through the plumber's liability insurance as well.

    damage to plaster

Forgot to say Elligabe, keep in touch with the plumber too,,,, let him know that you're not happy, and what your plans are.

    damage to plaster

Hmm,, hard to say what to do then Elligabe. I would agree with you that you want the job back as it was, and no, you're not over-reacting. If you're not happy with this situation at the moment, i'd go and have a chat with Trading Standards and see what they say about it. When you have a job...

    damage to plaster

That's the thing with plasterboard, if it gets wet through a leak etc, it normally ruined, full stop. If the plumber caused the leak that did the damage, then it's his responsibility to pay for any damage. This would be covered through his business Public Liability Insurance. Quite often, it's...
