Hi, thanks for the replies & advice. we have only just moved into the property, we don't own it, a local housing association does. therefore we werent here when the work was done. a complaint? not what the guy said, but possibly from the HA if they did an inspection prior to us moving...

Hi, we had local council round last few days, they've knocked around most of the street asking questions, they also wanted to inspect our neighbours 2 story extension, conservatory & some brick outbuildings. they said they concerned no permission ever sought / given, also several breaches...

Pulling new coaxial through with old cable stupid?

if your paying to have the aeriel moved, then usually they will as you say, supply & fit a new cable too. most engineers will run the cable in the route you request, however time more than how much of a roll of £6 RG6 cable is used is normally the factor, I would check & see if you can...

Just bought a Multimeter - Any good guides online?

I looked at the link for the T50, nice tester & a good price. When i finally get around to upgrading from my multimeter (which i use several times a day & know like the back of my hand) I would like to have a tester with a clamp. Price is less of an issue as i do sometimes need to check live...

    Static discharge prevention

while i was looking through part p & BS7671 i read you cannot connect a 12vdc device earth to mains voltage earth. (any sparks who can confirm / correct please comment here) so i "assume" that the earth bond you have is for when you install the hard drive or possibly but unlikely for...

    Fuse keeps blowing

hiya mate. tbh it doesnt sound "that" bad lol... the lights seem about right (remember i'm not a spark) as 6amp i believe is normal. the sockets usually have 30AMP per floor the cooker i couldnt tell you without looking in my own CU. i thought it was 40A but that might be wrong...

    Static discharge prevention

Hiya, The instructions will guide you here, as it gets a little murky between manufacturers & models. some DVR's are 12v dc. some are 240v ac. you should not connect the earth of a 12vdc appliance to the mains earth, however if it is a mains voltage model, then it's fine to do that...

    sockets in garage

Hi BAS, sorry. I didnt think of those  so (also to confirm my own understanding), the o/p needs to check where the supply to the garage fusebox comes from. if the supply comes from the fusebox in the house for example, then he needs to check if the garage feed was taken from...

    Fuse keeps blowing

I'm not sure about regs for the circuits, but i've never known sockets to be on the same circuit / fuse as the shower. (except for sometimes the shower pump & fan) are you sure they are on the same fuse / circuit? it seems a huge load if the shower, boiler, washing machine, coffee maker &...

    Static discharge prevention

what is on the end of the wire? a mains plug? a cctv bnc connector? why would you connect a wire to a floorboard? do you find things usually work like that? must be cheap on the electric bill :) I have a cctv dvr. 1 3pin mains plug, several bnc camera inputs & and audio inputs...

Pulling new coaxial through with old cable stupid?

Hi James, pulling cable through plaster is quite normal although the route is usually done on a best educated guess of the person doing it. (bearing in mind safe cabling zones) I often use old cables to pull new ones through where possible, also cutinery wire, drain rods & the like, the...

    sockets in garage

I'm only a diy'er but i would have thought u needed a proper 30A trip & similarly rated 30A ring main in there for the appliances your describing if they're going to be on the same circuit. if your putting them on seperate trip's then depending on which appliances you connect & the total load...

    Fuse keeps blowing

might be misleading. but from what i've read - if i understand you right. the fuse tripped previously both appliances were replaced at the recommendation of the sparky the fuse still trips even after the spark replaced them if that's the case then can you get a refund on the work done so...

    cables

if the building being evacuated... and the rats leaving .... and a bloke in a rubber suit waving a sign saying "put down the wires & come out quietly" wasn't enough... you've convinced me... not to mention the crackling of electricity & arcing in the same way a plasma ball doesn't was...

Bu**ger - drilled through wire - what next?

if u do try to pull some through to repair it, remember to pull it gently, if it feels like it is snagged, then stop as you may end up damaging the cable behind the wall where you can't see it & do more damage... good luck with the repair :)
