    chemical flushing

Is hiring and DIYing it a viable option ? Is a power flush in the same kind of league as some jobs like draining and refilling your system, replacing a radiator etc ? Assuming you've read up a bit and know how its 'supposed' to work. Or do you need a good collection of 'bits' to fit the...

Smallest possible radiator to heat a kitchen, any thoughts?

another option is underfloor electric heating. depends on current/planned flooring but fairly easy to do.

    Can't light gas oven

the thermocouple was in the wrong part of the flame. ideally the end of it should be in the tip of a blue flame from the burner, but it wasn't. I've moved it and it seems ok now. cheers

    Can't light gas oven

I have a delonghi GSS601 gas cooker. I turn the oven to maximum, light it, and hold the knob in - waiting for it to be hot enough to stay lit. Instruction book says this should take about 10 seconds. But minutes later, it still won't stay lit. Any ideas for fixing it ? It is typically...

    Repair hairline crack in radiator

You could just tell them there's a problem with the radiator and it will need replacing. The most important thing is not to deceive the buyer. i don't know if many buyers would pull out because of a 100 quid radiator. If its a 'fancy' type they might not actually want another one of the...

    Mark up on parts

So that's - what - 150-200 quid for parts, plus 250-300 for labour ? How long does it take you ? There's more to pricing than quoting just some hourly rate which makes people think you are taking the ****. i.e. I might think 40 quid an hour is expensive but it would take me at least 2x as...

britony combi 80se burner goes on and off

My britony combi SE80 (manufactured and installed 1st half of 2002 I think) did this until the PCB went after a couple of years. On and off all the time, particularly during DHW at a low-ish temperature setting. It lasted about 2 years until a relay on the PCB failed (no suprise there)...

    gas supply too small.

    gas supply too small.

ta for the replies haven't moved in yet, so i'm not sure of the impact- e.g. is it serving the gas cooker as well... the servicing was done by a corgi - the information was 'advise that the gas supply pipe is too small (15mm)' or similar words. probably will get it checked/serviced before...

    gas supply too small.

i'm moving house, and just got a copy of the latest service report for the boiler there. Its a C&M Britony SE100 (hmmm, nice and cheap - well cheap anyway). It was noted that the gas supply is only 15mm, and its supposed to be 22mm (according to C&M install guide). What effect will this...

getting gas to an all-electric house

getting gas to an all-electric house

thanks! does anyone have any idea what Transco might charge for this ? i know that 'it depends' but a hint as to how deep I would need to dig would be helpful.

getting gas to an all-electric house

i'm thinking of moving house to somewhere which doesn't have gas. Its in the road, to other houses (including just accross the road) but I don't think there's a pipe to the house. How expensive and difficult is this going to be ? Its just a normal house a few meters from the pavement. Is it...

Hot water from the cold tap?

Your cold water pipe may be touching a heating pipe or the hot water pipe, transfering heat. The water probably doesn't sit in the pipes for that long, and doesn't get an opportunity to pick up additional contiminants. Tap water still has some bugs in - perhaps if these were warmed up to just...

    black gunk

might want to try some solvents to dissolve the grease, rather than ever stronger detergents to wash it away. have you tried any ?

    boiler fault

yeah mine reported that exact same fault, but it was actually the PCB. I ended up doing some of diagnosis, checking the APS and Fan were both working, venturi was clear etc... finally coughed up for a new PCB (100quid)...easy to fit...did the job. The PCB design seems to have been revised -...

    Bendy stairs !

quick update - i put in some vertical supports from the string to a baton on the wall (rather than right down to the floor), which was already there. Stairs don't move much now, although there's a bit more creaking - I guess because the whole lot doesn't move any more.

    Bendy stairs !

thanks for the replies. the stairs are exposed underneath so I can get to the wedges etc. to be honest it didn't cross my mind when I replied that lots of people have them boarded/plastered underneath to form a flat surface underneath. i'll have a good look later, see whether bolting the...

    Bendy stairs !

oh quite accessible - the space is in an under-stairs cupboard which has some stuff in but not completely packed. there's the usual gas meter and associated piping. lecky meter is elsewhere. so I reckon I could put in some more support from underneath. the stairs are against the party wall...
