    Bath shower diverter innards

I've just been to look at one of those victorian looking tap/shower units where the shower hangs across the top of the taps like an old telephone. The central diverter lever that changes over from Bath Taps to Shower is snagging, so i'm going back to dismantle it tomorrow and see if I can...

    PTFE on compression fittings?

As a rule, No, but if all you are left with is one manky olive that will probably leak, our tutor advised us it was just about acceptable to wrap the olive in PTFE tape (when its already on the pipe) and create what he called, a cushion, to create a seal. If the fitting is new or in good...

A year on & still losing pressure overnight...

Whenever I hear the words 'Pipe in concrete floor' I shudder a bit as its often where the problem lies. You have two options. 1) Inject Fernox leak sealant into the system. It will either work or it won't, but a system that loses pressure over night suggests a leak that sealant might not be...

    Micro bore gas pipe,

Its Wild West Gas Services again.....I'm not sure even a cowboy would do that though. Looks more DIY to me, but I stand to be corrected. Alfredo

Glow worm compact electronic boiler dreaded red light

Yes but with a blocked DHE Heat Ex its not uncomon to get a little burst of red hot before it all goes cold, so the DHW heat ex has to be checked out at the very least for blockage. Its sounds like an overheat lockout too which ties in with the boiler being unable to get rid of its heat into the...

    C/H Expansion tank filling continuously

A split coil had occurred to me too but as muggles says, one tank would feed another and you'd get an overflow running somewhere so i ruled that out Alfredo

Glow worm compact electronic boiler dreaded red light

Its unusual for a failed diaphragm to send a compact into lockout. Having said that, a failed diaphragm is the commonest fault on them and I regard them pretty well as a service item, so unless its had a HW diaphragm recently I'd change it anyway. At 0.7 bar I'd expect a Compact to run, but...

    Radiator pulled off wall

My nightmare was having to refix rads to collapsing plaster walls. The rads were below a window in a kids bedroom and he used to stand on the rad to see out of the window. It was like putting a fixing in a cloud of powder. In the end I put wooden battens on and used everything in my armoury...

    Unvented Training Questions

Did mine two days ago. As I remarked elsewhere its a lot of money for what it is. I've been asked to quote on a couple so that why I did it. Its is changing, but i've no idea what the changes will be or when. Alfredo

Replacing Condense Trap on GlowWorm 30 CXI

The grit is just products of combustion and water and bits and bobs from inside heat exchanger. Nothing to worry about. As I said, on later models it was sealed anyway. On boilers with easily removable siphons ( e.g.Worcester 24i Juniors) its often like a gritty paste when you clean them out...

    C/H Expansion tank filling continuously

Before digging up pipes in concrete floors or putting in drops chuck some Fernox leak sealant into the system and obey the instructions. It sometimes works, it sometimes doesn't, but we had enough success when we had 'upgraded' systems to pressurised with pipes in concrete floors..whch then lost...

    room stat location

Well I'd probably suggest you put a TRV on the hall rad if its really boiling you, but yes balance the system first. I'd have though the common sense thing to do with the wireless stat is to try it in a number of different locations and find the one which suits you best. Its not as if you are...

How long does a Glowworm 18HXi condenser boiler last?

This takes us quite a long way from the question you asked in the first place though, which was how long an 18 Hxi will last. Its always helpful to get the whole picture if you want the most helpful replies. Could be that a combi is the easiest option for you from what you are saying. Alfredo

How long does a Glowworm 18HXi condenser boiler last?

Why not just convert to pressurised Central Heating system and put in an unvented HW cylinder replacing your current cylinder (subject to your cold main pressure and flow being OK for unvented) . This gets rid of all your loft tanks and gives you a dogs danglers system. Far far better than a...

Warm Front grant - bypassing Eagaheat

To answer the original question. You are stuck with Eaga. BUT...if you and/or your landlord have serious reservations about the spec, then you have every right to raise those concerns with Eaga and hopefully negotiate a system that suits your needs/requirements better. There is plenty of...

How long does a Glowworm 18HXi condenser boiler last?

Who is the someone? A 2004 Hxi probably needs its silcone burner compartment door seal replacing with a graphite one if its not been done already. Is there any rust in the bottom of the casing from leaking condensate. If thats all OK and a flue gas analysis checks out OK I'd say your money...
