Thanks to all for the advice. I have now got it sorted. I've put a couple of pictures below showing how I did it in case it is of use to anyone else. If anyone can see any obvious mistakes, please let me know. I would point out that a couple of the wires are not fully in in the pictures...

Thank you for the replies. Ekmgdrf, I will try that when i get home and report back. AndyPRK, the new one is also a double switch. I am unsure whether there is anything going on out of sight, so I will pull the old switch apart later to check. Thanks again.
