We do have damp in the room below but it seems to be just along the skirting board where the previous damp proof course has failed.

Thanks so much for your posts. I've added a picture of the outside. There is still a gas fire in the fireplace downstairs in the room below in the lounge. It's not blocked up as far as I know.
