    Master Socket question

You probably have a d/w No10 feeding the house from the pole, they come with two pairs of wires inside, complete with three yellow suspension strands ( underneath the little plastic protector fitted on the end of the cable ). The green black pair is used as a second line, so you can disregard it.

*BUMP* Anybody ? I don't want to go and buy a load of gear only to find out that I'm wasting my time. Thanks

Surge protection in the Consumer unit

Does anybody in the UK make a Surge Protected din mount mcb for use in the CU ? I've seen adverts for them in the USA on Google but nothing for the UK market.

Telephone Voice crackling and busy tone when dialling in

Anything is possible faggster. One of the favourite faults is where people have laid the cable underneath carpets and the constant people traffic above it splits it and eventually wears it through. If you don't fancy rewiring for new cables, you could always try some of the other conductors...

Having a visit from the Local Electricity Company.

Hi again guys, just been talking to a YEDL guy who said that there is still a bit of a backlog on their work but it's not severe. He said the timescale for work like this from phone call to work being done is on average about 6 weeks atm, so not too bad. Anyway, I digress :) I've been...

    Cast Iron Cut Out

Hmmm, just looked at the plans for the tnc, tns & tncs arrangements. I suppose without being able to see into the Cut-Out itself, it's pretty hard to tell ? Do the Electricity Companies do the Neutral~Earth connections within the Cut-Out usually ?

Messed up telephone wiring, help please!

Every ringing item of eqpt that is connected to a phone line has a Ringer Equivalence Number ( REN ) BT state that this should not exceed 4, or they cannot guarantee that all the phones etc will ring. You can connect as many sockets as you like ( as long as you have one master to the remaining...

    Cast Iron Cut Out

This one is in my house in Hull - also YEDL :- Securespark, are all Cast Iron Cutouts on TT supplies ? I guessed by looking at the earthing arrangement on mine, it was a TN-C. ? I can't see an earth rod anywhere on my property & all the Bonding Earths go straight back to the Consumer Unit...

Messed up telephone wiring, help please!

Rhys, you must have a master socket somewhere in the house, otherwise your phones would not ring. The master socket, whether old style or one of the newer nte5's ( with the detachable lower plate ) is wired internally to allow the ringing current to pass to the sounder/bell in the phone. I...

Having a visit from the Local Electricity Company.

Thanks for that John. I will get my lad onto the case. His company has got an account at CEF in Hull, so I should be able to get what I want pretty cheap. So, to summarise, I'm gonna buy a 12W Split Load CU; (prolly MK) The MCB's I need;(are the ones in the existing CU OK or are they...

Having a visit from the Local Electricity Company.

Well, from the info that you guys have provided me with up to now, I am beginning to think the same way. I am pretty anal where it comes to wiring tidiness, ( wiring up equipment racks in Strowger Telephone Exchanges taught me what is neat and what is not ! ) So, from suggestions on here, if...

Having a visit from the Local Electricity Company.

Hmmm - methinks that I may well have opened a BIG can of worms (literally) here  I took the front off the consumer unit to have a look what was inside, I think it may have been prudent to do this earlier as here is the result :- The taped-up single wires are a feed to the shed...

Quick question about the Jacuzzi Connection. Could that be put into a larger Consumer unit or does it have to be installed separately ?

Having a visit from the Local Electricity Company.

This may well not be the case in my house coz the cable is well exposed under the flooring. It's laid on top of the general crap under the house. I've got a Corgi guy coming in next week to do that. The main feed pipe is movable so all he's got to do is alter the feed from the meter for me...

    Moving/Extending master socket

If you have a BT NTE5A ( or possibly a 5B, although not seen much now apart from on alarm installations ) you will find that you can terminate ALL variations of BT Drop-Wire on the screw terminals provided on the main plate of the socket ( the bit your NOT supposed to touch  ) Even the...

Having a visit from the Local Electricity Company.

Is there any chance then that the fitter will suggest that the U/G Cable underneath the house should be replaced regardless seeing as it's prolly over a 100 years old ? I don't have a problem fitting/terminating any switchgear. I have had some (very) basic electrical training as part of my...

Having a visit from the Local Electricity Company.

Thanks for that reply. The one thing I forgot to mention was that I also asked how much it would cost to move the meter from the stud wall in the gas cupboard, to the party wall, to make it easier for me to have a new staircase fitted in the future and they quoted me £334.88. The thing is...

Having a visit from the Local Electricity Company.

To replace the Cut-Out on my supply cable, after I rang them to say it was leaking what looks like Tar. The wiring is very old, the previous owner must have had summat done a while ago coz there is a Consumer unit with circuit breakers in it but after looking at stuff on the .net, it seems like...
