Replacing old hallway floor with flagstones

We are replacing the old flooring in our hallway, which appears to have been laid on a soil/hardcore base of some sort. The house is 1920s. We are planning on replacing with flagstones approx 22mm deep. What sort of mix should be used for this?

Rear Extension - Proximity to Existing Outbuilding?

Detached property with detached garage/workshop, which is positioned such that the left hand side of the garage is directly in line with the right external wall of the house, and positioned about 3-4m behind the rear external wall of the house. See the sketch below. This would make it seem...

Buying a House which was previously Bomb Damaged

Looking at buying a 1920's house which apparently suffered bomb damage in the 1940's but was repaired/rebuilt by the original builder at the time. From what we have been told, the damage extended to front elevation windows and roof slate tiles fell through the front bedroom ceiling. Thankfully...

    Repointing a solid brick wall

As a completed novice to this area of building, how would I go about repointing the brickwork on a house of solid brick construction? The walls are solid brick, the house was built in 1925 approx. Or should I leave this to a professional, in which case what would be the rough cost per m2 for...

Brilliant, thank you. Problem sorted. Re-pressurized and now working. We'll have to get someone in to sort the leak.

Main Combi 30 Boiler E1 Error

Our boiler was switched off over the wkd, when we returned there was water on the floor underneath (there is a regular drip from underneath the pump) and when switched back on the display alternates between the temperature (19) and the error code E1. We've tried resetting but it makes no...

Possible Rising Damp but not sure...

Hi ree, thanks for the tips, we will investigate further. The house was to be long term investment not a 'flip', but plans change. We know the history of the house it was never done-up previously as a quick resell. Thing about these walls is, they were decorated winter 2012/13 and the...

Possible Rising Damp but not sure...

Ok well I painted over these areas once more in desperate hope but doesn't make any difference. No point trying a different colour either as I expect the results will be the same. Is it worth taking the plaster off in one of the affected areas? How would you tackle this problem?

Thanks for the response chaps, interesting links there. I will take some photos in the morning and post them up. For info, the areas affected are on the inside walls not the outside wall which is fine.

Possible Rising Damp but not sure...

We have a front room downstairs which we redecorated last year but over the recent months three areas of the wall just above the skirting have developed discoloration of the emulsion. The wall doesn't *seem* damp and in fact we sanded back to the plasterwork then re-primed and repainted. But...

Bosch Oven Dead - Need some advise please.

Existing oven came back on no probs when reconnected, haven't touched any wiring inside the oven although there is a torx-headed panel at the back for access to these (standard I guess).

Thanks for the reply John, circuit fine as swapped the connections over from our existing oven so I could test the Bosch.

Bosch Oven Dead - Need some advise please.

Just bought a used oven in good condition and assured working when it was removed, however when wired up to test it, there's no display on the timer no signs of life at all. I'm taking the sellers word in good faith so is there anything else I can check? The connection is the 'wired in' type...

Urgent Advice Please - Building Inspector Failed Roof Tiles

Thank you so much for your kind replies gents. We actually know the builder fairly well and are still in good comms as we have been supplying other work also. So all is not lost there. We never gave any specific instruction other than what was clearly laid out and specified in the architects...
