    Kitchen/ Diner redesign

The DIY stores do it too. Try several of them, as in any profession there are good and bad ones. When I needed a design for my kitchen, the Homebase guy left a gap between the cabinets and suggested that I should find a local carpenter to make some shelves there. The designer from...

    Pull out "shelf" in cupboard

If it is floor level, can't you just put it on castor wheels?

    New bathroom

OP, I can't comment on the price as I did my bathroom myself except skimming the ceiling and the walls. It was full refurb, including replaicing some floor joists and the total cost is approximately £2000 - most of it for materials, bathroom suit and cabinets, etc. If you need somebody to do...

    Help with work top

I would imagine the cut have to be precise - exact depth and shape - which is not easy, if possible at all with block plane. I would imagine your best bet is to go to a tools hire shop and explain what you have to do. They should advise you which router bit to use and probably would have clamps...

    Laminate flooring questions

Can't comment on installers, as I put the laminate down myself but a quick search shows that there are profiles for stairs and self-adhesive laminate for the vertical parts. I only opened the link to the Quick-step web site but would imagine the other manufacturers provide similar materials.

    Bath not draining

Any supermarket sells block drains cleaners. Yes, they dissolve hair, I've used them numerous times. Read the instructions, some of them should stay for an hour, some - overnight.

    Help with work top

Why would it have to follow the cut out shape? When I cut with a router it follows a guide I clamp to the workpiece, and it is away from the cutting line, the distance depends on the size of the router's base.

Bathroom Cold Tap on Mains OR from Header tank

I am not a plumber but in all the houses I have lived so far, the cold basin tap in the bathroom has been connected to the mains. I checked to make sure it is drinking water. Sorry if anybody feels offended but the alternative looks to me sooooo old fashioned.

    combi boiler install estimate

In Cardiff 5 years ago I paid 1100 for a new combi (including the boiler and all the parts). Some pipework was done as I had the boiler in a new location. The house is ex-council 3 bedroom semi. BTW British Gas quoted 4000 for the same job and it was their summer sail price. Shop around.

How do I fix this wall?

The paper layer of the plasterboard is on its back, so it is very unlikely you have damaged it :)

New Kitchen, Starting with Flooring fitst

Regarding plywood and its preparation, search the tiling forum, there are a lot of topics, where tilers explain how to prepare a timber floor for tiling. You don't need to make you floor as thick as required for tiles but the rest of the advice is relevant for you purposes. You don't need...

Are there any downsides to water UFH?

The law of physics, I imagine. On top of the hot pipes/cables you would put some solid materials - screed, timber, tiles, tile adhesive - depending on the floor covering. None of these materials is a good heat conductor, so it takes time to raise their temperature and to allow the air in the...

Are there any downsides to water UFH?

You might not believe it but some people are actually cooking  Sorry, I just couldn't miss the opportunity  On a serious note, thank you for all the comments, I am going to bookmark the topic as a very useful one.

Painted masonry prep - to sand or not?

Yes, exactly. gav1nnn, I did some search on internet, too, when my house was to be painted. And yes, there is no mentioning about sanding. Which means it is not necessary. Why you, after doing similar research and finding the same information 1) don't believe your painter? 2) ask...

Painted masonry prep - to sand or not?

My point is - it is not always possible to strip or sand a painted surface. My house is rendered (textured finish) and was already painted. I had it repainted. How was the painter supposed to strip the old paint. Or to sand the render. There are situations when this is simply impossible. Apart...

Painted masonry prep - to sand or not?

I am not a professional decorator but how are you going to sand textured surfaces, e.g. render, or textured concrete blocks?

Although I am not a specialist, it is hard to believe that the boundary is a matter of agreement between you and your neighbour. Have you seen the property plan? Check the land registry web site.

Advice on Negotiating Price Reduction Following Survey

What was the evaluation of the surveyor? If the estate agent would like a copy of the report, I don't see any reason to keep it secret. My ex had a similar experience. He is selling his house, accepted an offer of 135, then the potential buyers said the surveyor had estimated it at 110 due to...

    Yellow window seals

Try T-cut from the automotive stores. My windows were painted - not deliberately, whoever painted the walls just didn't care and left brush strokes over half of the frame. I scraped most of it carefully and cleaned the rest with T-cut. Works wanders!
