    Restoring old wooden school desk

I think I will use some sort of stripper on it (as it were!); let it dry and then sand it. I'm not looking for a really professional, flawless finish, but I am 'good' at attention to detail so I will spend some time on it.

    Restoring old wooden school desk

Amateur numpty alert! I have an old wooden double school desk, circa maybe 1930s, I want to 'restore'. It's had plants standing on it in a conservatory (thus has some water stains) and has been both oiled and varnished in its time! I want to 'strip back' the surface and may finally either oil...

How can I tell if flooring is laminate, engineered or wood?

To be honest, I am surprised, if it is laminate, that the manufacturers think it worthwhile to have 'grain' through all the depth if no one will ever see it?

How can I tell if flooring is laminate, engineered or wood?

I should add it's 'floating' as in it's laid on underfelt, on top of the concrete. Having tried to look at photos on-line, I am interested in the fact there appear to be no layers at all on mine, and the 'grain' of the wood on top continues down the end-face of each plank. Sorry I can't...

How can I tell if flooring is laminate, engineered or wood?

Concrete floored 17 year old 'estate' house so definitely not 'period'! I can see the side of an area of the flooring (short ends of 'planks') by lifting the inset door mat. Thsi floor continuously covers most of the downstairs of the house. There are no layers in the material. It is tightly...

Would a new boiler be quieter?! New recommendation?

We currently have a Potterton boiler in the garage. It's probably 12 or 13 years old. It broke down 2 winters ago (Leaked all over the floor; snow melt water got into the vent pipe thing!) but has been working OK since. Anyway, though it's working OK, we are getting the garage converted into...

Can someone explain how my HW and CH system works, please?

Thanks very much. I and my bloke (who can program a mean computer but who can't hammer in a nail...) will study the diagram closely- there may be a couple more questions!- but thanks to everyone for helping!

Can someone explain how my HW and CH system works, please?

Numpty alert! I am from 'sunnier climes' where we don't have CH, & I have recently moved into a UK house where I don't get how the CH&HW system 'works' (though it does!). We have, in the garage, a Potterton 'boiler' (thing with the pilot light). In the loft is a pressurised Megaflo. The 14...

    BR or Building Notice?

Sadly, woody, I am struggling to find a builder who does appear to know what he's doing without full plans (and BR) in place! 3 have been so far. 2 won't actually quote til I have the BR in place! This all brings me back to my very first post months ago- How can I get BR unless I know what I'm...

    BR or Building Notice?

I am trying to convert a single integral garage into 2/3 living room and 1/3 garage/store, retaining the up and over door. This will involve the installation of a new external window, too. I gather the new wall that divides them must be fireproof (several people have advised me of what that...

PP and BR- anyone got any advice?

Who's going to check I've complied with BR? A Council inspector? Do they come and inspect all work, however (relatively) minor?

PP and BR- anyone got any advice?

I am hoping to do a garage conversion, turning an integral garage into 2/3 living room and 1/3 garage (keeping the up and over door). We'll obviously need a new window in the new living room, and a new dividing wall between the rooms (no door). Obvs it will have to have a fire rating as it...

Good price for a 1200x1300 DG uPVC window?

Only in as much as that it doesn't have a visible black latex/rubber strip that can be peeled out , and the 45 degree profiled uPVC moulding that sloes down towards the glass pane isn't priable off with a screw driver (to enable someone to get access to and actually remove the panes of glass)...

Good price for a 1200x1300 DG uPVC window?

We are converting our garage and will need the above window- 2 panes of glass, one side to open, some sort of trickle ventilation. We have been quoted £900, fitted, by Zenith (after lots of titting about, taking very low interest loan, a discount card etc etc). The product does look quite...

PP mandatory docos. Are there templates?

Ah, I see. I thought the FULL meant Full PP, not 'as opposed to Outline PP'. I did think Householder was only OK if development rights were 'permitted'. I am going to try the planing Portal again with Householder and see what it gives me, ie if I still have to state the opening hours of my...
