    Hot water pipes through wall

My boiler is in the garage, my hot water cylinder is in the house. The pipes to circulate through the cylinder and the hot water supply feed go through the wall with a fairly large gap around the pipe. This lets draughts in. I understand expanding foam is a no-no. So is there anything...

    Grundfos 'bronze' pump !?

My central heating/hot water pump is an orangey/yellow coloured Grundfos pump. I was chatting to a plumber round the other day, who said, I shouldn't have one of those fitted. He said all the following: It was a 'bronze' pump. The pressure would be to great for the system. That 'it' (?)...

Alternative solution to noisy Stuart Turner Monsoon pump?

Got a noisy pump myself... Can I ask how much ST are charging to send an engineer out?

    Radiator balancing question

They operate from 1 pump and come off the same manifold, but then they split. But not by zone control valves. It's a bungalow in a T shape, Boiler/pump on the left hand side of the "T" and then two split off in their own loops. The right bit of the "T" gets hot quickly, as it's nearest the...

    Radiator balancing question

Uhmm... thanks... I know how to balance them. And that page doesnt actually answer any of my questions.

    Radiator balancing question

I have two 'runs' of radiators. One run heats up quickly and nicely, all the radiators on the other run take quite a bit longer to heat up. So I balanced the first run and have opened both valves on the radiators on the other run. My logic behind it was that the hot water would take the...

    Potterton Suprima (off and on)

Anything I can do to check/diagnose/fix these? I'm waiting for local plumber to "fit me in", but would like to have a look/check in the mean time.

    Potterton Suprima (off and on)

Piping hot... I can't keep my hand on it. After the boiler stops, I can still hear the pump faintly huming, and gradually the water in the pipe cools... Then it's just warm.

    Water softeners...Guidance needed

I'm no expert, just a user... 1. You can drink softened water with no problem, there have been reports of it being high in sodium, but nothing significant.. probably less than some bottled waters. I suppose it comes down to taste. 2. Depends on which one you get, some work on an...

    Potterton Suprima (off and on)

I have a Potterton Suprima 100l. Had the notorious PCB replaced about 2 years ago. But it's being a bit odd again.... The boiler starts, I can see the flames, the pump is running. The boiler runs for 45 seconds precisely, the pipes leading from the boiler get hot, then the boiler...

    Tree with multiple trunks

I have a large chestnut tree in my garden with four main trunks, where the trunks meet at the bottom there is a 9 inch hollow, which just collects rainwater. This rainwater is smelly, stagnant, and is full of slugs and gnats. Is there anything I can do with this? I was thinking along...

help with rads - unbalanced on purpose !

I've lived here about 18 months and they've always been slow to warm up. They do get hot eventually... after a few hours. Yeah the 6ft ones. How do I know if they're upside down ? Actually... thinking about it I'm pretty sure they've only got the connections at the bottom... no openings...

help with rads - unbalanced on purpose !

Not just one rad in living room. All 5 column rads in living 'area'.. (Dining room and Lounge) It's not just the 'room' thats slow to heat, all the rads are slow to heat as well.

help with rads - unbalanced on purpose !

My bungalow is a T shape, with the horizontal bit all being bedrooms with TRVs on the rads and 'normal' radiators. The vertical bit of the T is an open plan kitchen, lounge and dining room. These all have the tall column rads (no trvs) The thermostat is in the dining room. The house...

    2 port valve fault

Valve Update ! I took the head off, and the manual lever/cogs seem to be a bit knackered, in that I push the lever down and it misses some cogs etc. So I replaced it with a TFC Tower Val 222MV, only took a few minutes to replace, and it opens the valve with the thermostat and timer .... as...

    2 port valve fault

The worn cogs/mechanism - would they be in the valve bit or the head bit ? So don't sit on the fence  Do you think a spray of WD40 and a DIY replacement head would be a "good bet" to cure my problems ? Don't worry, I wont be back on here tomorrow morning about 'bad' advice :)

    2 port valve fault

Thanks for that. I've read that it's more likely to be 'something' in the power head than the valve itself sticking, as the valve just opens and closes... thats it's job. Where as motors and electrics are things more likely to breakdown. Does this seem to make sense?

    2 port valve fault

Fault/Vault  Thanks ! All I could see after taking off the cover was the motor. (I didn't see any cogs) I haven't got round to removing the motor yet. I take it the motor comes apart quite easily to put some "3 in 1" in ? I'm relatively happy to spend the £35 on a new power head...

    2 port valve fault

I assume if the valve is sticking that I'd have to drain the system down to replace  If so... anyone know any decent plumbers in the North Kent area ?

    2 port valve fault

My 2 port valve seems faulty, in that the heating is permantly on. The lever on the side is floppy... if I give the power head a whack the boiler turns off and the lever rises. It says on the side of the power head that it is a 'normally closed' system. So.... where could the fault be ...
