    A definitive answer please.

If I ever choose between Gloss or Satinwood. I'm always going to say Satinwood. Manufacture, alas, I tend to go Dulux - but that's because I don't have a great choice of other suppliers at hand locally. I think satinwood is more subtle and less in-your-face. I'm pretty sure it seems to hold...

    making good old downlighter apertures

I'm voting for skim the whole lot. You'll go crazy as your going to see (in certain light conditions) all of those little dimples in your ceiling for years to come... Personally, I hate downlighters... Give me wall/wash lights any day.

Dulux Trade Diamond Matt (White) 3 Years on.

Ah... Thanks for the tip dcdec. I agree with you. I'd get a mix list done first, then give them a call. If ever possible I do prefer to give my trade to an independent, you usually get so much better service. OK, sometimes you pay a little more (perhaps a couple of notes) but that's fine too...

Dulux Trade Diamond Matt (White) 3 Years on.

Just a thought... Now, as you guys (or most of you) are professional P&D's and paint does not tend to go off so quick AND you prob. use a stable stock of paints - Trade Gloss/Satinwood Stain block's UnderCoats Mist Coat for plaster Magnolia (on trade jobs) ect. Do you ever consider...

Dulux Trade Diamond Matt (White) 3 Years on.

dcdec, I've opened a cash account a while ago. I only use Brewers if I "need-it-now". If I'm doing a whole house (as I did last week), then I'll have a good look around. To be honest, my local B&Q came out the cheapest. Would have been a little cheaper with the Trade account (B&Q) at their...

Dulux Trade Diamond Matt (White) 3 Years on.

Im happy to give that a go. However, I can't buy from Brewers as the charge soooo much and their rep has not even bothered to return my call about costs. Stunned ! Brewers obviously have not been effected by a fall in trade :-)

    Sanders and Vac's

On one refub, we had one large door we made up from a 4ft x 8ft door blank. It was massive. I painted/sanded this about 6 times going through the grits and the end result was stunning. Took a few days. But, as it was going to be touched every day, it was worth it. Well, I thought so :-)

    Mist coat

I used to use the supermatt, but could not tell too much difference between that and a Macpherson paint, other than the price. However, when it comes to glossing, or finish coats, then I will switch back to Dulux.

Whats the best screen material for home cinema ?

Don't just paint your wall, ok it will work... But not as well as a custom screen. Their is some technology behind the screens in terms of gain, reflection ect. I've got a pull-down screen that was about £130 (7foot wide). I've never had the luxury to have a permanent installation -...

Downgrade from sky to freest or freeview

My vote is for a Humax Freesat HDR using your existing Sky cables. It's a great product. Sure it's like £200.. But you pay it once...

    Systemline Modular System

GGgrrr... Did a conversion and installed a multi-room Audio system (Systemline Modular) 3 years ago. However, about 2 weeks ago it failed. I was out of warrantee. Basically the power supply had died. I opened it up, all the capacitors had blown and leaked. I thought this slightly odd as I...

Loft Conversion - Fire door at bottom of loft stairs advice?

I'd never seen a ViiFire... In My last open plan conversion I did, I installed a sprinkler system. It cost me £1,200. The service on that is £125. That's just to check the water pump. Boy, they are spanking you on the checking fee ! They must move pretty slowly, weighed down by the large gold...

    architectural stuff

The number of times I've seen 'Architects' come up with some absolutely daft solutions. Some might even think they have never been on a building site.... I had one developer mate who was doing 25 hi-spec flats in the south who's Architect mate managed to forget to give some of them bathrooms...

    Sanders and Vac's

I'm not a painter by trade, but as part of the refurb job it's one of the jobs that need to be done. Now, as I've got a portable vac I use this with my sander and get great results and seem (to me) to speed up the prep work no end. Also, between coats and a higher grit level seems to really...

Dulux Trade Diamond Matt (White) 3 Years on.

A little bit of feedback on a pretty expensive product sold to me by a rather convincing sales person (how politically correct am I). Did a very modern renovation of mid-terrace circa 1900 house 3 years ago. Did All the walls with 1 x finish coat of Diamond Matt. I've got two large (30kg)...

    Silk painted wall

I'm going to ask a stupid question. What happens if you DONT wipe down/sand before painting. Does the paint just not take very well and you need to do 2 x coats to get a decent coverage ?

Floors in extension have dropped, cracks in door frame

A normal builder is going to come in, do his job as best he can and as quick as is possible (esp. on fixed contracts). Wet timber and plastering will contribute to shrinkage reflected in hairline or greater cracks. It's good to see your builder has come back and had a look and told you what...

    Travis Perkins deliveries

Nice to see a sight manager who cares... Sends me crazy seeing some of the stuff that is wasted on commercial sites. Were a small company and we waste pretty much nothing. I have to admit, we do have a lockup full of rather odd stuff, but it get's used in the end !
