Periodic Inspections and Putting it right

As in all walks of life - there are good and bad. Some people will do as little as possible for as much money as they can extort. For an idea of how it should have worked - I did one last week for a woman selling her house - When asking me for a price, she mentioned a couple of things...

    Adding a Garage consumer unit

Because you haven't got a clue what you are talking about - and asking on here isn't going to help - how do you know that what you will be told will be correct.....we can't agree amongst ourselves half the time. Your knowledge is too limited for what you are talking about doing - it would be...

    Adding a Garage consumer unit

FFS - Give us a break!! You watch, we'll have John along in a minute telling us how it's a DIY forum and we should be nice and answer all the questions without being judgemental.

    SWA to my Garage

OK, Rough Guide - If you're gonna do it, you might as well do it right. You need to calculate the maximum demand in the garage. You need to determine the supply earthing system. You need to determine if there are any 'Extraneous Conductive Parts' in the garage. These three things are...

    SWA to my Garage

Do you really believe that you won't get 'conflicting' info on this forum?? :) That's like us believing that you're not doing this job yourself!

    Suitable socket for a spur?

....unless it's wired as a star (spider) - then they'll all just have one cable in them. :)

    Finding a Neutral Earth fault

On second thoughts, John, I have to disagree with these two posts: The reason being - this isn't 'Private Messaging' - Ask Doctor Electric This is a Forum - and lots of other people read the replies - so I think it's important to point out what someone has done wrong, as well as...

    Finding a Neutral Earth fault

I agree, to a point, John. I did try to help with the question - without getting on my soapbox (as you know I sometimes do). But it does get a bit annoying, and I can't blame some posters for criticising, when people come on here asking for help after they've done everything wrong......why...

    Finding a Neutral Earth fault

I don't think it is too late. Maybe for this fault - but what other faults might he have missed that just 'switching on' the power hasn't shown up. Maybe with the right criticism he'll have second thoughts and run the tests that he should have done in the first place. Do you think, if...

    Finding a Neutral Earth fault

Maybe, but as I've just posted - there's NO excuse for not doing the relevant dead tests before energising!! The good old 'bang' test........

    Finding a Neutral Earth fault

Thing is, John, if he was doing this for anyone else, he'd be in a bit of bother now - because, regardless of the cost to himself, he'd have to find the fault. Had he done the absolute minimum testing before a cu swap (i.e. Whole Board IR Test), he'd have known there was a fault 2 minutes...

    Finding a Neutral Earth fault

The first thing I would check, if you haven't already, is EVERY ceiling rose/fitting. I did a CU change not so long back where testing revealed a neutral earth fault on lighting - fortunately for me it was in the very first rose that I checked - rose had been screwed back on pinching the...

    Adding a new socket

I don't want to sound harsh, but my immediate thoughts are that you shouldn't be doing this at all. Your questions, and your description of the existing circuit, show s real lack of understanding of how electrical installations are laid out - but no doubt you'll do it anyway. :)

Schedule4-How to rewire most of your house without notifying

John and Paul - the problem with your suggestions (i.e. the making a kitchen not a kitchen, while you fit the electrics and John's 'replacing a damaged cable...one at a time), is that you are doing what BAS is complaining about - you are trying to make the law fit what you want to do. What I...

Schedule4-How to rewire most of your house without notifying

Strange that........ There's good old Schedule 4 defining that new fixed cabling or a consumer unit ARE notifiable. Depends how it's worded, doesn't it. Anyway, removal of a circuit isn't notifiable, as you well know.....stop being picky!
