Clarification of regs -adding socket to ring. What required?

I'd have to agree with that, John. If I had my way there wouldn't be any DIY 'allowable' electrical work ....apart from the swapping of like for like accesories - any 'domestic' electrical work would have to be done by a registered spark or notified to LABC by a qualified/competent spark...

Clarification of regs -adding socket to ring. What required?

I think a degree of common sense needs to be applied - the reason changing a protective device for a circuit is notifiable is because it is beyond the scope of a DIYer or amateur to do correctly and safely..........slightly more difficult than changing or adding a socket outlet. I mean, how...

Clarification of regs -adding socket to ring. What required?

Yes, I realise that John - I was using your post to hi-light my point.........which was that people seem to be missing what the OP is getting at. He is confusing 'notifiable' with safety & regs requirements - in other words, by getting you (and others), to confirm the work isn't notifiable...

Clarification of regs -adding socket to ring. What required?

It's not a replacement - you are changing the characteristics of the protective device for the circuit - a replacement would be like for like. I think everyone is confusing whether this work is 'notifiable' with whether it requires 'Inspection, Testing and Certification'. Regardless of...

Need to wire in an additional socket - advice

That's great news! - so we don't have to 'RCD' protect socket outlets any more? :)

    Strange Fault Symptoms

If you're talking about rotating them like I suggested earlier, I think you'll find it would give the same voltages. :)

Adding a spur to an existing socket

I think it's time you stopped fiddling with electrics. As for Ericmark's conclusion that a 'spur' is a 'radial' and vice versa - so they must mean the same thing.....I don't think so. A radial is a 'layout' of a circuit which starts at the CU and runs to 'wherever it ends', with as many...

    Strange Fault Symptoms

If this was the case, I fail to see how you can have an open circuit neutral on a ring final - unless, of course, your talking about two faults (as in the neutral broken in two different places).........which kind of complicates things and is a bit misleading. :)

    Strange Fault Symptoms

If I'm correct - and they trusted the readings and swapped Line & Earth (without checking markings on sockets), then they would have been left with a Line/Neutral reversal.....which would have then shown on the martindale. (and probably puddled their brains.) You just can't beat the proper...

    Strange Fault Symptoms

    All conductors were rotated - i.e. L in E, E in N & N in L. The martindale socket tester can't read a Neutral/Earth swap, so gives a reading of Line/Earth swap only. :)

    Strange Fault Symptoms

I don't understand your problem, Securespark. You've said what the fault was in your third line and then proceeded to give us the symptoms - as if wanting us to solve the fault??? What is it you're trying to say? :)

2 wall lights switched from one pull chord ...

Run a Twin & Earth from the ceiling rose (live feed, neutral & earth) to your first wall light - connect as per instructions, through the switch on the wall light. Run another T & E from the first wall light to the second one, but connect directli to lamp.....i.e. bypass the switch. This...

Help please - Wiring top of stairs light

This thread is a perfect example of why all DIY electrical work should be banned. You can guarantee that there is a big sticker on the OPs light fittings saying 'This accesory MUST be earthed'......but do they pay any attention - NO. They haven't got a clue.....no idea what purpose the...

Adding a fused spur - best way?

Good question, John. If the OP removes the face of the socket, drills a hole through the back of the socket and through the wall, then fixes a socket outlet on the other side of the wall and connects the two sockets together......is it deemed to be working in a kitchen?? Ordoes working in...

Adding a fused spur - best way?

Don't know why everyone is going around the houses here! Trickymicky - just spur ,(no fuse required), off the back of a socket (ring final) and run the cable to a single socket for the washing machine - and if you feel confident, there's nothing wrong with doing it yourself.

RCD wiki + Common Misconceptions about RCDs

Hi, I think you'll find that a N - E fault on a circuit would affect the operation of an RCD under L - E fault conditions..........just not in the manner that you are all thinking. Picture this, (or draw it :) ), an existing neutral/earth fault on a socket circuit. You go to plug in your...
