    the bodge job I did

To the new extension: If I've seen it correctly, then the ring runs around the perimeter of the room. The trench is a cut-out just deep enough for the cables. Wood will go over the cable so that the floor and wood are flush Laminate will be glued over this No idea where ring enters room...

    Live Fault

Could you please draw a diagram of what you have, how connected and where you measured voltages? The description is hard to follow.

    Power Shower Broken RCD

I don't think that there is a shower unit as such just a pressure switch operated pump. Bet it's hidden under the bath panels ;-)

Sockets Wired To 2 Circuits Simultaneously - Is this normal?

At a guess, given 3 sockets only and 16A MCBs, the person connecting the ring final (or more likely, someone who changed something in the CU) has accidentally taken one live and put it into a separate MCB. Two wires and two MCBs makes logic one in each; 1970s extension builders were not known...

lighting switch cable seems to be melting

Yep, my bad  I was thinking of rubber gloves as butyl rubber - the black things - and not the manufacture's original composition for latex gloves. It's the behaviour of the finished article which counts and glove selection guides (e.g. HSE) consider anything described as latex to...

lighting switch cable seems to be melting

wingcoax is right about the initials, but rubber is not recommended as a good protector when dealing with phthalates; latex is the best cheap material.

RCD and Mcbs tripping on new wiring for Shed

OP is away so I can show my ignorance by asking a question: phrased as logic Y/N Nothing happens when the circuit is energised so there is no permanent short circuit If the MCB and RCD trip as soon as the power is used then there must be a direct short The trips only apply to the circuit in...

    Outdoor Spotlights

Have a look at the LED ones on Amazon. Lots of reviews. I've just bought a couple and am pleased. Metal construction bolted together. Never need a new lamp.

    Electricity in the bath

RF's offer is great. Nice spirit shown there. Going back to the original post, there are two points (forgive me if I'm wrong) that seem relevant : There is a metal bath touching the wall. The OP gets a shock not just from the bath, but from the tiles. No mention is made of the type of shower...

    Something missing?

Yuk, but a question: as you need a working answer, will you fit a fused switch between the meter and the CU making effectively a micro -sub main?

    Shocking installation

Be pragmatic. As said you can't do anything without a proper report. Get the report and a costing for putting right and compare the costs with the cost of trying to take action. Bear in mind that once you do start proceedings you have effectively notified the lenders and legal representatives...

    Haunted garage door!

Try some 3-in-1 on the guides of the door. Don't put any on the electrickery bit or anything that's part of the automation mechanism, just incase they get funny about it. What are the guides please? Come on BAS .. this answer just has to come from you ;-)

Melting fridge lead whilst shower is on

As above, but don't use the FF. According to London Fire Brigade they are the cause of a very large number of domestic fires.

    Confused by loop-in lighting fitting

Have a look at the Wikis. Normally the L, N + E pass through pendant part which is attached to the ceiling. They are often marked as loop. From this the live goes to the switch and back to the fitting (it may be marked L or SL). Although it is live it will be blue or black and is not neutral so...

    Light stays on! Any ideas

To be clear (my eyesight is not wonderful!): you have two black wires going into the LH side, two bare wires, sleeved green and yellow into the centre and two reds into the RH side? If this is so, then none of them are to a switch (because there would have been a short circuit). This is simply...

Lights Tripping Out After New Plastering?!

When you say that it tripped on the second day: Was anything connected to those wires? What tripped? Was the lighting circuit power on (a RCD can trip without the circuit being on if those wires were touching)?

Neighbour's power tools tripping my RCD?

I may be misleading you as I'm not an electrician, but would suggest you talk with your neighbour and, as a first step, find out if any of his outlets do not work when you turn all your power is off and vice versa. Did he use the drill and sander powered from the same socket? Does the third...

Neighbour's power tools tripping my RCD?

Have followed with interest the RCD (etc) discussions and have no comments there due to my limited knowledge. Assuming a RCD problem can be sorted as being a faulty unit, then perhaps there is another way of looking at the original problem? The OP's description of neighbour needs a bit more...

Neighbour's power tools tripping my RCD?
