    New wall light is dim

   Misread it as being two separate luminaires. .... But ...are there actually two luminaires and another (wall) switch? Has the OP replaced one luminaire, leaving the other in position and with both controlled by two way wall switches? The OP reports on the built in switch...

Like EFI, I also was mixing up the length of the hole with the depth of a drill. John's explanation put me right; like most things, once it is clear, it's hard to see why we saw it incorrectly, but intuitively (I think) I originally thought about how would I make such a real hole and thus was...

    New wall light is dim

Another switch anywhere? If the strappers had been mis-identified then the lamps could be in series although the apparent live and neutral seem to be in the correct places.

    (spin-off) Diversity and cooking appliances

Perhaps diversity is a concept which has been overtaken by the changes in which kitchens are used? It is quite common in a "normal" domestic situation for all appliances to be used to the full for a short time (microwave, grill, fan oven etc etc) as a meal is prepared from frozen or chilled...

    plugs left on

The OP wants monitoring/control from a central point. Powerline communications could do this (here is one general link ; there are lots - plus some commercial systems - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_powerline_bus). A DIY version is here -...

Got it? Yes thanks. I hadn't realised the relationship with the cord length and the drill diameter couldn't change doh! I do maintain however that the logic of a 10cm zero diameter hole through an axis does mean that the sphere is 10cm diameter - I never mentioned a drill at all. You can't...

Builder set cable into concrete with no conduit.

Surely any builder would expect long fixings to be used in a bathroom?

central heating and hot water timer loses time

Sorry, but you need a new timer. I've had exactly the same problem and bought a new timer which solved the problem. Whilst old electric clocks used mains frequency, modern timers use a chip with a fixed frequency so your dyson wouldn't have any effect. Look for a timer guaranteed to be accurate...

    Monty Hall

Wow, that took me back a year or two and made my brain hurt! Can I suggest a different way of considering an answer? The only way you can get a hole of exactly 10cm length through a sphere on an axis would be if it had negligible diameter. This was pointed out earlier. Any width (diameter)...

    Monty Hall

Once you know the answer (2/3 on one side 1/3 on your side) it becomes clear, but it isn't intuitive. Like many things the mathematical or scientific explanation and even observations go against the way the human brain seems to be programmed; the Bernoulli effect is a good example. Why should...

    Weird intermittent hum..

This does sound like a question for a good plumber / heating engineer. Your combi boiler - cylinder setup doesn't sound right. There are variations, but generally the combi provides all hot water and heating at mains pressure without a tank or it provides heating and the hot water is via...

    12VDC Geared Motor Battery Advice

I've used something similar to power an automatic chicken house door. It pulls about 1 kg using pulleys and is OK, but caveats are: it only works for a few seconds twice a day when installing it jammed and got very hot very quickly If I rebuild, I'll use a bigger motor.

    Freezer shocks

This was really the point of my question (but trying not to lead); maybe the freezer was well earthed but something else - like a switch plate - was 'live' .

12v DC invertors for vans. Any one got one?

Have a 1Kw inverter and works well, but, as said, the battery soon dies if used for powering tools. Also have a tiny one which will power a charger; thus plugs into cigarette lighter (16A) and can be used on the move. Not often used, but can get you out of a fix.

    Freezer shocks

Question to OP; when you got the shocks, might you have been touching anything else or just standing on the floor?

Is My Masterplug RCD Safe? Please Help!

Question if you don't mind. How much power does an organ like yours need? How long would you play at one time? It may be nonsense, depending upon your answers, but I wonder if a charger - battery - inverter would give you the surge protection at reasonable cost.

    Can You Believe This?

Ah; thanks guys. I use Comodo which is a variant of Chrome and it can do some funny things. Will swop to Firefox and use preview for any future missives.

    Freezer shocks

Maybe better to cut your losses and buy a new one as even if you fix it your other half will never trust it and it won't get used. If you do get a new one you still need to check the RCD is working and the earth is sound.

    Removing wire from consumer unit

Yes, you should be fine. Test and if not sure stop and rethink. Give yourself plenty of time and do the job during daylight hours. A good trick is to talk yourself through it before you start. As well as the screwdriver and multimeter you will find a torch useful and, if possible, someone to...
