Step flashing - DIY or call in an expert?

Are step flashings used on new builds then or something else? If most plumbers and roofers won't do it I'm thinking there's an alternative (at least for cheaper builds). Any reason why I can't use the diagonal without the render?

Step flashing - DIY or call in an expert?

It's proving difficult to find anyone that can do it, or of they can they won't do it any more as there's easier jobs to make money on. Older guys don't want to be on the roof nowadays! :) I've been told that another solution is to cut a diagonal line into the brick (he used a name for it but I...

Building Inspector Not Sticking to The Submission

    Skylights - no BC - https://www.fakro.co.uk/blog/roof-windows-and-skylights-do-you-need-permission-to-build-them/ Garage/Kitchen door - fair enough, wasn't sure.

Building Inspector Not Sticking to The Submission

Imagine a door between two rooms. One room is a garage. The other room is a kitchen. Hey presto! I don't see why the entire project needs approval, it's daft. For one I could have started the extra bits a year later. I might not have known they were being done. Fine on a second submission...

Building Inspector Not Sticking to The Submission

Yes there is a door being placed into a wall from the kitchen to the garage. The wall isn't structural. Skylights don't need building control. Neither does the new door. They do have to meet regs but there's nothing to say BC sign-off is required. There are no structural changes to these...

Building Inspector Not Sticking to The Submission

Should be a kitchen-to-garage I can see it reads wrong. Still it makes no sense. Surely BC can't just decide to take on other work that's not related to the submission - including stuff that doesn't require building control.

Building Inspector Not Sticking to The Submission

Just wondering if this is normal. I submitted a plan for RSJ's to be put in the kitchen. The work was done and the inspector came round. He barely looked at it to be honest. Instead he noticed I was in progress with fitting a kitchen to garage door and skylights, neither of which require BC...

Step flashing - DIY or call in an expert?

I can say for sure I won't be getting it neat like that. I've had a hard job getting the lead to stay close to the tiles, it always wants to ride up. I may have a little lead left over and might have a go for two bricks to see how I get on.

Step flashing - DIY or call in an expert?

The flash stepping on my garage roof meets gable end has failed. I knew it had been bodged but on inspection there are fractures all over in the same place. It may be the sealant hasn't allowed for expansion/contraction. It's a right mess. Until today I had no experience with lead, but I'm...

    Felting & flashing a skylight

Hello all, I've fitted upstands for two sklights I made into a pitched roof (concrete tiles). Having not done roofing before I'm wondering how I should cut the felt at the corners of the upstand or whether it's best effort and seal with silicone. I envisage it'll be the same for the lead...

Attaching beam to single skin brick

Erm yes, so I'm removing the bottom chord and installating purlins going across, braced on the walls and the remaining 4 trusses. The truss I'm *******ising can't spread without pulling the purlins down. Connecting the purlins to the remaining trusses is easy enough via hangers. The purlins...

Attaching beam to single skin brick

You've managed to tell me everything I already know and didn't ask, and ignored the question. Sigh. Yes, somehow they will attach to brick. Somehow is the question.

Attaching beam to single skin brick

I'm gutting a middle truss on a garage (see red). The trusses support concrete tiles. I'll run new beams (I think the term is beam not joist) across the existing (see green) and will secure on the walls. The wall is single cavity brick on one side. Although it's not a huge weight what would be...

Self-Binding Golden Hoggin Gravel - My Experience

Just an update, after quite a lot of rain, plus whacking it down to get the milky colour, then left to dry, it's hard enough. I'm now warming to it more and may continue doing the front. Anyone in the North of England you won't find it anywhere, I got lucky that JTDove would bring it up.

Self-Binding Golden Hoggin Gravel - My Experience

I used type 1 MOT, I probably shouldn't have. I do have a 2% gradient on it though. While some use it with the term scalpings most of the quarries think of scalpings as old crap from roads being renewed, so tar, old sub base etc.

Self-Binding Golden Hoggin Gravel - My Experience

I was going to do the front drive but haven't been sold enough on it. I'm waiting for a big rain day to see how it holds up!

Hyundai Plate Compacter (Wacker) HYCP9070 Info Thread

Update Bolt on exhaust protector fell out. It has a spring washer but the vibes got to it. The second one was loose as well. The throttle lever is a bit **** and will forever dry to back the power off. It's just annoying though. Drinks petrol much much faster then a lawnmover! Even when hot...

Self-Binding Golden Hoggin Gravel - My Experience

Since there's not much on the web I thought I'd create a post with my experience. I ordered 10 bulk bags from JTDove at ~£80/bag, who sourced it from a quarry around Leeds area (although I suspect it was transported from down south, 'SB' quarries are all down south). I highly suspect that 'SB'...
