    which finishing sander???

When I put my oak floor down, I was lucky to be given a name of a finisher who does work for English Heritage and the National Trust - and he lived locally. :) He came round to check the finish and lock the colour for me. He (and his mate) came in and used, I think they're called random...

    wooden floor and staircase

Agree. A mix of timber types can be really attractive. If you try and bring the whole lot together with dye or something, it could all end up looking like your bank manager's office

    disconecting bath overflow

Don't think so, Frenchie. Remember the fitting has been exposed to water over a period of time and has suffered accordingly. Can only suggest getting a LONG screwdriver, and one where the blade is a snug fit across the WHOLE width of the screwhead. You can sometimes break the seal by...

    Interior painting

I normally use a big tub of cheapo white emulsion from one of the sheds to seal newly skimmed plaster. This is normally sufficient to kill the suction of the new plaster. Once dry, two coats of the final colour and job done. Hope that helps .....

    Junction box query

If you look in the reference section, there are some fabulous diagrams on how loop lighting circuits are wired. Essentially, the three reds will be loop in, loop out, and live to switch. I have to say, it sounds a bit cluttered with all the LV feeds coming off one connector. I think somebody...

    Skimming walls

Nice name :P You can get the rawlplugs out if you screw in a say a 2" screw just over fingure tight, and then use a pair of pincers to draw the plug out. It will leave a hole, but these can be filled with a normal filler. If however you are having the rest of the house skimmed, maybe that's...

    Plastering over an artex ceiling

How do you know the Artex contains asbestos? How old is it (the house and the finish)? Skimming Artex is a common way of getting rid of the stuff. Also boarding it over with fresh plasterboard and skimming.

    Help please!

Fraser I'll try and be a bit more helpful... As the lights are 240v, it is simply a case of deciding if a parallel or star connection would be best. Refer to the Reference section, and study the diagrams for both systems. Say you select the parallel connection method. Essentially, you need to...

    Brick arch

I think you'll struugle to make the arch you describe. The whole point about an arch is that all the forces are transferred from the key stone at the centre of the arch to the supports.

    Dripping noise in radiator

Are you certain that it's dripping? It could be simply that the rads are cooling down, and what you are hearing is the pipework/radiator contracting. Just a thought.... Thanks

    laying a new floor

Agree about getting access to the underfloor if you lay at 90 degrees. I was lucky as I was able to reroute all services, and therefore will have no reason to get under the floor in the future. My floor covered old T%G and also concrete. I used hidden nails for the T&G , and screwed into the...

    laying a new floor

You can lay these boards directly on top of your old boards, but fo what it's worth, you may want to consider the following: 1. If you lay directly on top of existing (T&G?) boards, you will probably need to lay them at 90 degrees to the old boards, or you may get a nice wave effect. 2. Laying...

    TRV "oscillating"

I have added a small extra rad to my heating system in the downstairs loo. All OK, except when the TRV starts to close, or is it open, it starts banging. To stop it, I just have to turn the TRV setting up or down slighty and it shuts up ... but starts again when the new temp setting is reached...

    Chasing copper pipes

Agree with above. At the very least, I would ensure that the joints are accessible via a removable panel. Hope that helps

    Order of work....

Suggest you sort wiring while ceiling is down. Lay cables to where lights wil be mounted, and leave enough slack so that you can fish these out later. Then put up boards. Suggest 12.5 board and screws - more secure and easier to put in - have you tried nailing to a ceiling? - you need to be...

    UPVC Window Dimensions

Just my two penny worth... When I replaved my windows with custom made ones from Magnet, they told me they automatically reduce both height and width by 5cms from the dimensions supplied. Could be worth checking with your supplier to see if they do the same..?
