    discriminating against travellers

mine too......... totally concur with alarm's comments I've known a few socially, they are human and nice enough to have a drink with, but i wouldn't want them anywhere near my property or personal life. and i certainly wouldn't want to get on the worng side of one either - i'd add...

    Evicting rioters.

what's the problem? they go from a nice cosy all your maintenance looked after council pad with a new kitchen every 5 years or whatever non sense there is going (and a friend of mine swears by his council house) on to having to join the private rental market, there are deals around now that...

    Framing Nailer

well........ it's silverline, so i'd imagine it's a piece of **** but in life you do get what you pay for. generally.

    Random Tottenham riots!

it takes all sorts don't it? well, one good thing, the drive home tonight through lewisham was brilliant - just like when england play :) still, we should try and understand the protesters - there is obviously something troubling them, we should listen to them - that was a paraphrased...

    15mm Hot pipes

probably not unless the hot water source is fairly close - 22mm carries twice the volume of water of 15mm, so all that cold water needs to be flushed through before the warm stuff arrives. personally i wouldn't change the spec.

    New Bungalow

a friend of mine has an 8' wide drive down to his house, the only problem i can see is that reversing up an 8' drive is a pita (especially if it's uphill). you'll have decent turning room at the new bungy?

    Daft retaining wall price?

£1,500 to £2k for the sleepers, concrete? fixings? other timber for battening? is the digging happening by hand or machine? that leaves about 2k for labour - at 150 a day, that would be 13 days or over a week for 2 guys. sounds like hard work for someone......

    Framing Nailer

i got a new hitachi nr90gc a short time ago - never thought i could justify the outlay and cost of the nails, but glad i got it. used a makita & paslode before i got mine, but i prefer the hitachi (the price also swung the deal). paid £270 inc vat, and if you google people experiences you'll...

Grundfos Home Booster will not turn off!

painfully expensive pieces of kit these. if the pressure was indicating correctly i'd go for a faulty flow switch or a leak keeping the flow switch on. sounds more like your pcb has got itself fried. have you powered down, whipped the case off and checked for leaks/water stains etc...

    supporting floor joists

that's got to weigh nearly a tonne, how much void do you need to pack out? those jack look like they may not be suitable to use, maybe use piles of engineering bricks laid with a 1:4 mortar mix. assuming you're going down to the concrete oversite under the floor. an alternative that...

    drainage pipes

I'd have slapped the concrete over the drain - that's more protection than it would ever have in the ground with tree roots hunting for cracks and so forth. brownie points for your builder ;) 22" overall depth should keep them out of mischief................

salts on surface of printed drive

efflorescense when the salts migrate to the surface isn't a long term problem as eventually it subsides.... but if they are sealed in, it's hard to see how the problem will go away. maybe it's not that the contractor is at fault & did a bad job (you can't avoid efflorescense, sometimes it...

    Scaffolding Prices

sounds alright to me. it'll be a ladder at the front and another at the back though, can't see them putting a ladder frame walkway over your roof from front to back, i'd guess they'd just walk on your neightbours roof - i did say guess ;)

what is the best way to lay slate chips in my front garden?

a good weeding, dig out any perennial roots as they will try and struggle through, some fabric from the garden centre (porous) then about 25mm of slate to completely hide the fabric from view & UV degradation. you would only want to protect your wall if you are within 150mm of the damp proof...

    power costing

depends how well insulated it is i suppose. you could try timing the interval between the element kicking in, then time how long it kicks in for and take your calcs from there. when it is not being used obviously. if it's 1 minute in 30 then that's 24 minutes x 3kw = 1.2kw - whats that? 12p...

    Blocks with different compressive strengths

weight certainly, they're more dense so should be more durable if weather exposed, visually i can't see much difference. they are certainly harder to cut! the cheap wickes medium density concrete blocks are fine/better for your project though, or go a little further and get hollow 9" wide...

    Soak away

dunno, but i usually just cut a small hole in the fabric and poke the 110 through well into the soak away.........

AVI film jerky when played through usb on home cinema

usb sticks have different read write speeds, might be worth finding out if yours is a fast or not so fast one. also, what about the file size? if it's a compressed or smaller file size than a dvd quality flick, the frames per second might be lower, so faster moving sequences become jerky.

    Have they crossed the line?

i know this is off at another tangent altogether, but isn't there something about none of us actually owning any land - it's really just ours for life & the crown actually owns it? that just surfaced from the swamp that is my memory - i seem to recall listening to an article about it a few...

Concrete bases for concrete monstrosities.. I mean, garages.

if the old base is settled then it won't be going anywhere, i'd be confident putting 4" of concrete and mesh over that. and a volumetric mix is good news - no left ofer concrete and no short delivery, plus it will be the mix specified and not 'that looks like a heaped shovel' much more my speed.
