How to board an insulated loft?

when i upped my insulation, i put 6x2" timbers on edge, pinned them to the joists with screws then boarded over that to give a raised deck and full insulation. if it's just a narrow walkway you could board over the existing joists & replace the insulation with something of a higher performance...

Rads getting hot Shen heating off

it would. see if you can operate it manually and listen to check the valve works on the controls - you might get away with just changing the head.

Anyway To Work Out The Route My Drains Take?

HSS hire shops C.A.T. and a detection Sonde. you rod the drain with the sonde and the cat pick up where it's at. Used one once and it was dead easy. even for me.

    Extra Rapid Cement - Workability

same mixes - if i'm after a faster set i find that a stronger mix sets quicker, you could go with a weaker, wetter mix in this weather and maybe get your half hour, it's just be a bit of an experiment.

which is best, wooden or concrete post?

a 2.7 metre concrete post with a 6" concrete gravel board and a 1.8 metre panel will allow you to put 75cm of the post into the hole - much less likely to move than a mere 60cm. concrete will outlast a decent post, if using wood, then 100mm square posts are the way to go.......... the...

    Extra Rapid Cement - Workability

I use it for concrete quite a bit - mix it, and use it straight away - it goes stiff in the barrow very quickly. i'd guess 15 mins or so, but after the first time i had a barrow load go off, i've never since mixed it up before i'm ready for it. of course, colder weather and it's a bit...

    No Fly zone imposed..

Look, the place will be a lot better without flies. bad for the flies yeah, but what's the biggie? trouble is it looks to me like the nutter will win within the week and then what - unless the arab union goes marching in that's it for libya. i'm amazed we are talking about a no fly zone...

    Replacing my Crittal windows

usually when the rep comes in with his 10k quote, he will come way down and when there is no margin for him to make a commission he slopes off. then the company calls back with the real price a little while later. it's an obscene way to trade but there you go. £2,500 for ally that...

    generator size?

most jigsaws are a lower wattage than that, so the answer is probably yes, but check your jigsaws wattage and keep the extension lead to a sensible length.

    Relocating the loft hatch opening

It's a good diy job - and you can fit a decent insulated hatch if you don't already have one. it's only the councils concern if it's their house ;) moved mine (it was in the bathroom with very little head room in that part of the loft, so it's a mystery why it was fitted there originally)

    Mastercrete vs portland?

yeah i take your point - a lot of posts seem to be a client checking that the contractor is doing it right. as a contractor, this is something that does rather hack me off! trouble is that half the guys out there charging top dollar for their work aren't really up to scratch, so i find it hard...

    Mastercrete vs portland?

Being a bit harsh there aren't we? I am multi skilled up to a point - plumbing - good, brickwork ok.... the list goes on, but when it gets to rendering/plastering i'm complete gash and i know it. so i'd want to know the ins and outs if i were having some done, but wouldn't waste my time...

What is causing this water leak?

if someone ran an overflow through the wall of the tank, put an elbow on and cut a length of pipe to the height of water required in the tank then the overflow would come out of the bottom (like in some bog cisterns). in practice though it'd be a lot of hassle for a cosmetic effect in a loft...

    Fuel prices........what can we do??

i've been driving diesels for years and never once been dipped.......... but i wouldn't take the chance. i was seriously looking for a petrol panel van with an lpg conversion, but who knows how long it will be before the gov.uk decide to raise the duty on lpg. besides, petrol vans seemed...

Is this plumbing repair going to cause future problems!?

he may have used compressions as he couldn't dry the pipe out to solder it, but it's bad practice, and i wouldn't concrete it over. 22mm to 15mm to 22mm - could he not have formed a crossover in 22? it's like having a crushed pipe in the system..........

    Recommend me a new blowlamp...

i wouldn't bother with mapp, it puts more heat in quicker than propane, but if you are not right on the ball then and end feed joint can dry out before you get the solder to draw. if you are doing yorkshires then it's not such an issue, but i'd suggest sticking with propane anyway. that...
