    Dilemna....new boiler

Just thought that I would update you with the result. We went with a combi in the end. It's a Valliant as recommended on this site. The shower water pressure is just as good as when we had a pump and of course now we will never run out of hot water. Well chuffed!

    Old hot water tank

wow that was quick. Thanks very much. I'll make sure they don't take it away. Hopefully I'll get a couple of quid. I'm also going to try and sell our old shower pump on e-bay! Don't suppose anyone wants an old Concord WRS boiler (dated early 80s) do they??!! In good working order!

    Old hot water tank

We are having our system changed this week to a combi boiler. Therfore the plumbers will be removing the old hot water tank (I think they said it is a 35Litre tank). Should I ask to keep this and then take it to a local copper merchant? Are they worth anything? Cheers, Chris

    Extractor fan and toilet

I've just been to DIY shop and bought a mains operated extractor fan. I believe it is IP4 rated. The fan is going in a room which only has a toilet and a sink. Does this room still have zones? I want to put it above the toilet (on the wall). How high above the toilet does it have to be...

    Dilemna....new boiler

OK, I have a very old concorde WRS boiler which has an F&E tank in the loft. We want to replace it with a more modern efficient unit. The other problem we have is that there are 5 of us (Me, wife and 3 kids) and with our current setup we run out of hot water after just 2 showers. I got a...

taps still a problem with pump

If it helps in any way..... I had exactly the same problem after I installed a shower pump. However as soon as I had got round to putting the shower screen up and we were using the shower everyday it went away. It never happens now. Are you using your shower daily yet? Chris

    Smelly toilet with pic

Hi all, At the bottom of my garden is a granny annex. I have recently taken the old toilet out and replaced with a new one. Since doing this it has started to smell of old poo. You can put some bleach down it and it goes away for a few days but then it comes back. I'm pretty sure that I...

Will my pipes take mains pressure

Hi, I currently live in a victorian terrace which has a standard CH system with two tanks in the loft for cold water and then a hot water tank in the airing cupboard. I want to change to a sealed combi boiler system but have got a few questions. Will my current pipes take the new 'mains'...

Towel Radiator ...TRV?.. Or Not TRV?.

I must warn you that I'm no plumber but here's my 2 pence worth anyway! I put a towel rail in my bathroom and did put a TRV on it. For about a year we had it set to full and it did get very hot. Then the other day my 6 year old boy lent up to get a towel and has burnt his chest. I'm pretty...

    Sky TV Connections

The previous tenent/owner must have had Sky+. I believe that Sky+ needs two LNBs (bit attached to dish) and therefore 2 cables. Your box should work with either cable conected. You won't do any harm by plugging either one in anyway so just give it a go and see if it works. Chris

    Moving a radiator..

Yes. Doing it all but leaving the radiator for another day is exactly what I did.

    Moving a radiator..

I have to confess now that I am not a plumber but I have done what you are suggesting so I thought I would let you know what I think! I have used freezer spray in the past but it only lasts 45mins so should only be used for small jobs. Also 1can = 1 45min session and they cost £10 each...

    Bulbs in grass

Hi, I spent the best part of last summer clearing my garden and planting a nice new lawn. All was looking good until about a month ago when I noticed a lot of bulbs popping up. While digging the lawn I did see a lot of bulbs but I thought I had got rid of them all. I know nothing about...

Easiest way to install a TRV

Hi. I'm just in the process of decorating and have removed a radiator. However now I've got a leak coming from where the copper pipe meets the valve for the rad. I'll try giving it a quick tighten but if this doesn't work then I'll replace it with a TRV. I don't really want to drain the...

    Bathroom light pull

The issue here is whether the switch is class 1 or 2. (I or II) If it is class 1 then it MUST have an earth because under a fault condition you could electrocute yourself. If it is class 2 then it requires NO earth. Usually if it is metal then it will be class 1 but not always. Check...

    Downlighters in single story house

Thats great Luminaire. This leads me onto another question then! I've already got some standard 240v downlighters (not fireproof). If I put energy saving GU10 bulbs in them will this stop them from getting dangerously hot? Here is an example of the bulbs...

    Downlighters in single story house

Good idea Daytona. I did think of that but I'm at the 'can't be bothered' stage now so I'm looking for the easy option like a light fitting I can just put in! I might however have to resort to the 'battening' idea..... Why is it that a job which you think will take a few days always takes...
