Will I be forced to have a water meter?

big-all: - there are 4 of us, and the house is currently 2 bedrooms / maybe 3 depending how you count them...! I got my bill the other day, and I seem to remember it was £250 unmetered, supply only. I wouldn't consider myself a frugal water user - I do like a good shower, and the kids both...

    Thermal Store advice

Pre-installed PHX for HW. With TMV on output. Pre-wired pump for boiler, & pre-plumbed TMV for constant temp boiler return - which you've added. Pre-wired pump for CH. Pre-wired buffer stats for part-reheat, or full reheat, and programmer to determine which stat is used when. Centralised...

    Thermal Store advice

I'm with Simon. A well set-up thermal store will take a higher capacity boiler than might be considered 'normal' for the property concerned. The only difference will be a faster recovery time. Personally, I'd favour a direct system rather than indirect - otherwise you'll find the boiler...

Will I be forced to have a water meter?

Hi all. I'm not sure this is the right forum for this question, but figured you were my best bet.... We currently have an unmetered supply with Yorkshire Water. I'm thinking of having my mains water supply re-routed - for a variety of reasons that I won't digress onto right now...

Cheap and simple evacuated tube solar hot water.

I'm no expert, but that looks ok to me. If I'm understanding correctly, that is exactly what RigidRaider has got.... I think...?

Cheap and simple evacuated tube solar hot water.

Thanks for getting back to me RigidRaider. I did try to PM you, but the system wouldn't let me... it said you'd blocked PMs from non friends. :( I've not managed to work out how to do a friend request, so I did the next best thing and chased you around the forum! If you...

Lining paper peeling off ceiling above radiator.

+1 to neat pva. I'd also roughen the surface you're sticking to if you can, to provide a key for the glue. 80 grit paper should do it I'd have thought. RigidRaider - Sorry to semi-hijack your thread, but I've posted a couple of questions on one of your old threads - in DIY projects -...

Looking to start up on my own?

I absolutely agree; I just meant "as well".

Looking to start up on my own?

OP - I know someone said to get an accountant, but the really important bit is to stash some money away for your tax every time you get paid for a job. At least 25%-30% of your 'profit' for the job. Your tax bill comes in two big lumps each year, and if you've not got in the habit of putting...

Back boiler - pipes getting warm without fire on?!?

OP - If you're looking for a metal header tank, eco-equipped do them. From memory, the price was pretty reasonable.

Cheap and simple evacuated tube solar hot water.

Hi RigidRaider I'm currently planning a solar thermal addition to my thermal store, and read your thread with great interest. I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering - a year or so down the line - whether you are still happy with your set up? Would you do it again - knowing what...

Would like a thermal store but advised otherwise???

I'm no expert, but that doesn't look remotely like it has anything to do with a gravity circuit (the pump is a bit of a give-away!) Presumably there are some pipes running into the loft from the fire back boiler? - Vent & heat dump? If there is an existing fire back boiler, there should be...

Would like a thermal store but advised otherwise???

It is possible to have a thermal store linked to a solid fuel appliance via a pumped circuit rather than gravity. It isn't what I've got, but I know it was an option when I specced mine 6 months ago. Obviously there are safety considerations blah blah blah, but fundamentally it is possible as...

    Banging when central heating on

Sorry onecog, but I thought it was generally considered a BAD idea to pull on the pin - because it is possible to pull it from the fitting??? I understood that the standard advice was to use a spoon in the palm of one's hand to press it in and out repeatedly to work away any sticking...

    Advice on replacing isolation valve.

I must've been reallllllllyyyyyy lucky then. And the bloke who swapped the shiny chrome body onto the dull brass nuts got lucky too! I should go and get myself a lottery ticket I'm so lucky! :D

    Banging when central heating on

TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) come in two halves. The valve body is the metal bit that joins the pipe coming out of the rad to the pipe going to the boiler. The valve head is the plastic bit with numbers on that you twist to turn the radiator up or down. The valve head is joined to the...

    Banging when central heating on

Both sides. They may already be open - if this radiator is hot, you can arguably ignore this step. Has this banging materialised from nowhere, or have you been making changes / decorating / had any work done recently?

    Banging when central heating on

Yes, anti-clockwise to open. Flow and return should both be hot when heating has been on a while. Ideally, you should be able to tell one is hotter (flow) than the other (return), but they may both be too hot for that. If the return does not get hot at all, that tells us something. If...

    Advice on replacing isolation valve.

The basic answer is 'yes'. It looks to me like someone has already done that - shiny body and dull nuts. It is possible that the pipe recess within the new fitting might be deeper than your existing fitting, which isn't ideal, but isn't a dealbreaker on what I assume is an open-vented /...

    Banging when central heating on

If the pump is broken, then there's your answer. But if all the rads are getting hot that suggests your pump is fine. The first thing I'd suggest is to check that the TRV-less radiator valves are open. Try to open each of them by one full turn (in order that you can put them back as they were...
