    Extending wifi coverage

SimonH2 - thanks for your advice, it’s much appreciated. I’m laying the Cat 5e this week (that’s the easy part for me) then I’ll have a go at setting the routers up (the scary part!). Thanks again!

    Extending wifi coverage

Sorry to hijack this thread but I’m also trying to extend my WiFi coverage and you guys sound like you know what you’re talking about! I have a Sky router in the lounge and I need to extend the WiFi signal to the study at the bottom of the garden I have an old Netgear DG834GT router which I...

    Thicker newel posts?

Hi Ian, your staircase looks very similar to ours and I’m also faced with the problem of increasing the size of the newels. I believe you used mdf in the end? How did you secure the mdf to the existing timber? Are the square corners noticeable? Any chance of some pics of them sanded and...

    Table Saw Blades

Hello, I’ve inherited a (cheapo) Ferm FZB-720 table saw which needs a new blade. The existing blade is 200mm x 16mm with 20 teeth but I’m struggling to find any of these at a reasonable price. Toolstation do 200mm blades with 30mm bore and a 16mm reduction bush...

    Loft insulation

Hello, The recent cold weather has made me want to top up the loft insulation. The existing insulation is 100mm laid between the joists and I’m looking to lay another 170mm across the joists. I want to keep as much heat in as possible but I’m concerned about the possibility of condensation...

    Splitting HDMI input

Thanks Lucid, I’ve got a very old Sony DVD-Amp for 5.1 sound but this doesn’t have HDMI. What you’ve linked to looks like it will do the job so I’ll order one and connect the sound output to the Sony via the optical port. Thanks again for your help - much appreciated.

    Splitting HDMI input

Hello all, I’ve got a Optoma HD20 projector that’s linked via a HDMI cable to a Blu-ray player. I’ve also got an Amazon Firestick and I’d like to watch movies on the projector but the projector doesn’t have a separate sound output. Is there a “device” that will split the HDMI signal from the...

    Cable size

Yes I'd already thought of "borrowing" an inch or so! Excellent - thank you!

    Cable size

Fingers crossed then! I see 1.0 is 7.8 x 4.25mm with L&N cores of 1.13mm dia while 1.5 is 8.2 x 5mm with L&N cores of 1.38mm dia. Is there an easy way to determine 1.0 or 1.5mm² cable or is it a case of getting the vernier out? I'm grateful for pointing out the more obscure requirements of...

    Cable size

The irony is we have central heating and SWMBO only wanted the electric fire as a "focal point" because it has LED lights down the sides! In hindsight the feed cable may even be 1.5mm - I only know it's thinner than 2.5mm. I'll have another look at the weekend. Thanks for all your help guys.

    Cable size

Thanks for your replies gents. Yes the arrangement would result in a single socket being fed via a 1.0mm spur from an existing twin socket on a 32amp ring. The fire would be plugged into this single socket and still protected by its 13amp plug fuse. I understand this is not permitted by the...

    Cable size

Thank you for the advice and apologies for the delay in responding. I'm not questioning the advice I've received but, to satisfy my curiosity, can somebody please explain about the fault current? The fire came with a fitted 13A plug on 1m of 3core 1.0mm cable. Why is this acceptable if the...

    Cable size

I'm sorry but I don't understand what appears to be conflicting advice. If there was a fault then wouldn't the fire be protected by the 13A fuse in the plug?

    Cable size

I've had a gas fire removed and we want to replace it with a modern electric one. The gas fire had a FCU for the electronic ignition and I want to change this to a single socket to plug the electric fire in. But I've since found the FCU has been spurred off a nearby double socket in 1mm T&E...

    Extend existing garage lighting circuit

Is it ok to feed a 2 gang light switch from 2 separate cables - each carrying live, switched live and earth? I want to extend the existing circuit and put a second light in the garage and replace the existing 1 gang switch so the 2 lights can be switched separately. The reason for the question...

    Dowel jig question

Thanks guys, There's no intermediate shelves - it's just a series of rectangular "boxes" that will be mounted on the wall to hold DVD's. There's no back to them - that will be provided by the wall. Each shelf is 1.2m long which should hold about 100 DVD's so there's no real weight in them -...

    Dowel jig question

Good evening, I'm trying to build some shelves in 18mm MFC and I want to make the joints hidden by using 6mm dowels. I've bought the Clarke dowelling jig set: http://www.clarketools.net/cdj2-clarke-universal-dowelling-jig-set-9189-p.asp I'm trying to make a Right angle joint but the dowel...
