Just looked into this further. It may be easier and cheaper just getting a laptop-specific card. SDIO devices, although using exactly the same socket contacts as an SD card, probably won't interface to your laptop, via USB ard reader, in the same way that an SDIO slot on a PDA would...

Thanks Dextrous. Assuming the water did not splash over the sides of the bowl this would be quite a good effect then, providing a more powerful flush. I guess I could limit the flow somehow at the cistern end (partially obstruct the downpipe), if things got out of hand!...

I the SDIO card uses an interface that your PC has (USB for example) and the SDIO card manufacturer has written drivers for the operating system on your PC, this should work. Check on their website.
