    chasing in electric cables

Steel capping will not protect cables run outside of the zones. You would need to use earthed metal conduit or go to 50mm deep outside of normal zones.

Changing from Economy Seven storage heating

I think it is even worse than that! From what I understand, if you have the E7 tariff the night rate is around 1/3 cheaper than the day rate but the day rate is already slightly more expensive than the standard tariff price. As stem says just stick to E7 with storage heaters and top up when...

    Can't Switch on RCD

What make of CU is it? I was called out to a problem recently with exactly the same situation that was a faulty RCD. I think it was energised against a fault and gave up. It was a very cheap looking make of CU that was only four months old with no name. Just a logo like a small circle and...

    fused isolating switches

I agree with Dingbat - Don't cut moulded plugs off under counter appliances. Use DP switch on wall above and non-switched 13A sockets below. How often do you replace the fuse? More to the point why do you replace the fuse? Answer - when the appliance has gone faulty, in which case you are...

Then why not ask your 'pro' when he comes to test and inspect your DIY extension wiring and fill out the forms???

A question about CU Earth (and others random wonderings...)

That is correct, the shower doesn't HAVE to be on an RCD but it is a good idea to have one on a shower. To say that without an earth the RCD is nearly useless is not true as it functions just the same regardless, tripping when it senses leakage to earth through some undefined path. You...

    TNS OR TNCS

Don't mean to be rude but if you can't work this out should you be filling out the form in the first place?? On a more helpful note try looking in your OSG.

    Electric shower

Kerry, it sounds like it has come to the end of it's useful life. Do you know how old the shower is? Might be time to call in a sparks for a replacement with a new one but get a few quotes. Did you notice any reduction in your water pressure in general from the taps recently?

    Live earth?

Be sure that when you say 'Neutral' that you are correctly identifying what is an actual neutral and not just a black wire. Some black wires at the switch or lamp position may be switched live wires with no clear markings.

    Consumer unit

Richi, are you sure you have the neutral wire in the correct side of the RCD. If the live is on the RCD protected side then the neutral must be on the RCD neutral output side and not the input.

    Cable concerns

As Lectrician has already stated above, the SINGLE feed cable going into 'I' (which is the service head) is the incoming supply. It is Split concentric. The SWA on the right are your cables I guess going to your CU's?
