No earth cable in light fitting - new spotlights

This is reasonably common in houses of that age and as suggested a rewire may be due. However if you use only Class II (or non earthed fittings) it is normally a cheap alternative to a rewire if the condition of the wiring is Ok.

By law,do I need to use an electrician to install my cooker?

I am guessing looking at the cooker on the B&Q site that it will come with a plug and as long as you can just plug the cooker, extractor and of course the gas hobs ignitor into standard 13A sockets then away you go. I think this is the way they are going for ease of fitting I guess! No spaky's...

By law,do I need to use an electrician to install my cooker?

Some separate ovens now have a 13A plug. Is this the case with yours or is it more powerful than 3000W? And if it does have a plug is there a local 13A socket? If it is over 3000W is there a local 30A cooker radial connection point/switch? Are you replacing the extractor and is there a FSU...

Who is using my electricity - meter spinning no mcbs on

Now we are getting more information! When you say you recently changed the board, I am assuming that you carried out all the necessary testing ie. loop impedance, R1+R2, Ze, Insulation, RCD times etc of each circuit as you went? How experienced are you as this is not normally a recommended DIY...

Who is using my electricity - meter spinning no mcbs on

Faulty meter? Sounds old if it has a dial. Get your REC to replace it with a new modern digital one maybe. What happens with the main switch off also?

    few quick questions

A three phase generator has a star arrangement where the three phases of live are generated with respect to a neutral point. This neutral point is grounded at the source as the return path, and then the three phases distributed around the grid. The earth (as in the planet) is a good conductor...

    cooker switch with socket

I don't know which post's that is according to but it is wrong. The feed cable should go to 'Supply' and the cooker cable to 'Load' and it will operate correctly.

    Pull cord light switch wiring

Then it should be ok to throw the switch. (That is a terminal block or chock block as sometimes called) Be a little careful in future to properly describe what you have as we can only give advice based on what you tell us.

    Pull cord light switch wiring

That doesn't sound right. If it is wired from the supply to the switch as I assumed then the blacks should be joined together in a terminal block and not in a switch terminal. Clarify which 'switch terminal' they are in and do not switch on yet!!

    Pull cord light switch wiring

As the subject is 'Pull cord light switch wiring' it would be safe to assume this is a light not shower and is wired from the supply through the switch. As such the wiring described is fine by my understanding.

    Pull cord light switch wiring

That sounds fine. I assume the two blacks are joined and insulated?

    new ceiling fan

You need to be clearer about what you have got. ie. fan or fan/light? If it is just a fan it may be another live for a different speed setting?? Can you tell us the make and model or post the instructions on here?

    Earth Problem - fuse blows

If for example the original earth is damaged, say by nailing through, and is now broken from origin but shorted to live at the point of damage the fuse would not blow. This could make the switch end live and only blow the fuse when shorted to a 'good' new earth. Same could also be true of the...

1-way light switch on ring circuit

No. You may have wired the switch incorrectly. Can you explain how it is wired? You should use the common and one of the other contacts of the switch to break the live conductor alone. Make sure the neutral does not go into the switch contacts.

    Main ceiling lights stopped working

If you decided the bathroom fitting is wired 'loop in' (which has three cables) and you have unterminated these, then you need to reconnect the bathroom fitting with the original connections that your wife disconnected. If you have not noted which connections went where you can find great...
