    Hi-fold and slide and swing.

Bifolds are great you just need a good make and a good fitter (window/bifold fitter not a random builder). Avoid PVC/timber and go for aluminum. Lots of good quality makes at varying prices out there. Smart & Origin are 2 good ones I know personally. I'm also hearing good things about Aluk recently.

Changing a dummy sash on my upvc bay window so it opens

Yes fitted with a hinge is common to make installation easier, However they will likely be undersized/cheapest hinges possible so they will need replacing. Take a gearbox out of one of your working windows and look for any codes to see if you can buy the same ones. Also take photos of all the...

Pilk-K-Glass : How to tell which way round?

It really doesn't make much difference which way it is fitted TBH. Not anything you could feel and it would still pass building regulations either way. The additional savings on heating would be un-measurable unless you had massive full glass walls. Many installers like myself still fit obscure...

    Window Surveyor needed

Hi God I forgot you were in the Londonish area. He is looking for survey and supply, You may even be able to get the fitting as well he was just put off by a 4k fitting price for 7 windows from some local companys. Its all pretty straight forward just some slightly awkward window sizes for fire...

    Commercial unit converting to flats

Got to love how simple they make everything. I have a friend who does quite a few newbuild houses (I do his windows) and he has also just something very similar to my proposed flat 3 around the corner from this one. He got planning to extend the shopfront out further and rebuild the roof (while...

    Window Surveyor needed

As its brickwork the measuring will be easy, Its more a case of as they will be getting signed off by building control they will of course be hot on the fire egress and ventilation, So its more for regulation compliance. Obviously if he can find someone to survey and supply would be the best...

Hi guys. I was starting to think noone was going to reply here. I would have bumped it at some point but I'm having lots of fun working out how to get the new electric, water and gas mains in at the mo. The only stipulation on the planning consent is that its completed within 3 years. As for...

    Removing old UPVC French doors

Firstly unscrew the opening window sash. You will need to deglaze the large pane of glass from the window to access the rest of the fixings on that side. Yours look to be internally beaded (hard to tell from the pics) if so you just need a thin scrapper to prise the beads out. Look were the...

Interior uPVC frame pulling away from wall

Probably just some expansion/movement cracks, Doesnt look anything serious. Just refill the gaps with some painters caulk.

Exterior french door with narrow sidelite panels - Too narrow for drilling!

Have you got frame couplers too? if so how thick are they? You maybe able to fix right through from the door side to join the frames assuming the sidelights have metal reinforcing. For fixing to the wall get these...

UPVC cold air leak + who make my windows?

Cant help with the make. They are externally beaded so probably discontinued and around 15+ years old (although they do look unusually tidy for that sort of age). Do also make sure the hinges are clean and the top corners (triangle bits in the corners) are greased a bit. Your probably just...

    Sash window replacement

You may not be able to speak to many factory's direct as they will have deals set up with trade installer/retailers. decent quality timber sash windows (timber thats going to last more than 5 years) I would expect with trade discounts are going to cost £1000-3000 each. Basic PVC sliders £300...

    PVC interior French doors

That will be all of the large national company's then, There are actually some of us about that take our time and do a good job. For the OP. That sounds shocking 5-10mm gaps in the beads. Can you post some pics? From the description I would say unacceptable and should be replaced but that is...

Help with re-glazing an old door.

Security tape as mentioned, You can get 1mm tape. Or even just bed it in on silicone. Dont use putty! Linseed oil breaks down the sealant in double glazed units. Internal beading/framing is fine if needed. The units (if you want them to last) should have a 5mm gap around them for ventilation and...

    Sash window replacement

Have you thought about and researched PVC sliders at all? There are now many makes that are suitable for conservation areas and even listed buildings. These are some of the higher end ones, All mechanically jointed with traditional hardware...

    UPVC Door Threshold REPAIR QUERY

Repair company's do some amazing work but as you say not worth it in this case. If you do ever replace this door or any other make sure you go for the "low aluminum threshold" Less of a trip hazard and wont break like PVC thresholds
