    MCB trip problem

I recently wired a new upstairs light and power circuit. (The entire upstairs is being converted from bungalow to house). An electrician then came and checked my work and connected the circuits up to a new consumer unit. A couple of nights ago, a day after some new plastering was done, the MCB...

    Brick Tinting - any good?

Thanks for the tips, John. It seems you feel it's within the compass of a DIYer - perhaps i'll give it a go myself once the new bricks have been up a few weeks. You're talking about dyeing all the bricks i suppose, not just trying to dye the new ones to match the old?

    Brick Tinting - any good?

I'm doing an upward extension where the house is mainly rendered, with feature bricks at the corners of the building. The brickwork is 80 years old and i'm concerned that the new feature bricks will look very obvious and spoil the front aspect. I was wondering about brick tinting. I assume it...

    Wall Mounted Combi Under Worktop?

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I did find some reviews on the glow worm and they were all pretty negative, so i may have to think again anyway. i'm really surprised at the lack of choice of floor-mounted combis - and the high prices, considering they seem to do a similar sort of job to the...

    Wall Mounted Combi Under Worktop?

Thanks very much for the info - at least there is an option out there. I think the 6" or so that it would leave underneath would be sufficient clearance for installation. There is a suspended timber floor underneath, which could perhaps afford even easier access. Shame Glow Worm is in the...

    Wall Mounted Combi Under Worktop?

Floor mounted combi boilers seem to be very few and quite expensive. Is it possible to install a wall-mounted combi under a worktop? If so, I guess height is likely to be a problem. Does anyone know of a suitable sized boiler? Perhaps one with a rear outlet flue? Any advice welcome, thanks.

Insulation in Pitched Roof - Air gap required?

Can i ask a related question in this thread? I'm planning to fill with rockwool between rafters. The roof above is tiles and featheredge (no felt). Should/can i put a breathable membrane between the rafters - below the featheredge and above the rockwool? This would be to allow the rockwool...

    Insulating between rafters

When you say "felt", i presume you mean roofing felt? But there is none - just featheredge under the roof tiles. Does this make any difference to the advice you are giving? As i said, i'm planning on resilient bars under the rafters, this would produce a 17mm (approx) void between the vapour...

    Insulating between rafters

Woody - i appreciate the reply. Sounds like good news, but could you possibly tell me a bit more? Like what precisely i need to look for in the store as a "vapour barrier", (is a sheet of polythene OK or is thee something more specific)? how to fit? and whether i need one both sides of the...

    Insulating between rafters

I want to insulate (more for sound than heat) the upstairs room in a chalet house. What i believe i should do is create a 5cm air gap and then fill the remaining 5cm with 60kg/m3 rocksilk. My question is, what would happen if i did not leave an air gap and just filled between the rafters with...

    Mould Problem - Advice sought

I live in a 1930s chalet house and the staircase is effectively housed by a tiled 'dormer' extension to the roof. I suspect that is why i am getting dark spots in quite a wide area on the wallpaper - where the rising warm air meets the poorly insulated wall of the dormer?? Anyway, i want to...

    Bath Waste/overflow problem

Hi - i bought a "push 'n lift" bath waste from B&Q. I have a re-covered bath and it's prone to chipping from the current conventional brass plug... and the new waste was on special offer! Anyway, when i look closely, the current overflow hose fixes to a spigot in the current waste pipe just...
