How to test if single wire is live

Sorry if this is daft but if you have a single wire visible how do you check if it's live ? I.e what do you attach the other lead of the multimeter to?

    Battery backup for Honeywell ST699B

Yes that's the beastie. Looking at the pdf file supplied via the link, it states that the battery backup has its own charging circuit so I suspect it is not replacable and will require a new unit. :( Many thanks for your assistance.

    Battery backup for Honeywell ST699B

I should have been clearer in my original post. The unit works fine most of the time but if the power is lost then all the settings are forgotten. I can't find a reset on the unit and there is no mention of it in the instructions. Is it inside ?

    Battery backup for Honeywell ST699B

I think that the battery backup for my Honeywell ST699B CH Programmer has failed. Does anyone know if there is a replacement battery available or am I looking to have to change the whole unit ? Thanks.

    1930's Tap leaking from top

Fixed :D The tap wasn't as old as expected and the problem was that the inside of the tap had come loose and the whole thing was unscrewing when the tap was turned on and off. Just screwed the thing back down tight - job done in about two minutes

    1930's Tap leaking from top

Hi, Received a phone call from Mother-in-law last night about the hot tap on her bath. When off - no problem. When the tap is turned on it runs fine but water also leaks from the top of the tap where the spindle passes through the outer chrome cover. Silicone grease ? New washer ? New...

    Digistat wiring

There have been so many questions (and some good answers) on here ref the procedure to wire a Digistat in place of an old dial type that I thought I would add my experience to aid those who do a search for the correct procedure. I have just exchanged a Honeywell T6360B here for a Drayton...

Programable roomstat a better bet ?

Er Yes  I have based it ALL on the apparently erroneous notion that it is cheaper and more efficient to keep both House & HW at the right temp 24/7 ! Am I going to have to rethink the whole thing ?

Programable roomstat a better bet ?

Thanks all - I am wavering now. I am sure that I have read somewhere that it takes less energy to maintain the temp overnight than it does to heat the house from cool in the morning prior to getting up. :?:

Programable roomstat a better bet ?

Thanks Breezer, Of the 4 options given I suspect that 1 and 4 are the easiest and cheapest to achieve. The key to it all really is which would be better in the long term for the system. IE, does it do harm to allow the system to cool down overnight by turning off the ch at the timer or is...

Programable roomstat a better bet ?

I currently have gas (Ideal Elan II) ch with a single dial thermostat in the hall and a programmable timer switch controlling on off times. I currently leave the system on constant hw and ch and let the thermostat do its job. Trouble is we get too hot in bed  . Some advice please...
