    Bathroom antics

Use a powdered adhesive desinged for natural stone, and make sure it's white. Grey adhesive may stain the stone. Fix, clean then seal throughly before grouting. Don't buy a regular wall grout for these, the joints are susually too wide to cope. I usually mix wall and wide joint grout...

Why not use a wide joint grout? Whats the thinking behind the sand/cement?

Tiling over plaster in the real world.

You need to ask the plasterers that, I've never fully got my head around why they still use it. I think the very thing that makes it bad for tiling use, makes it good for plastering although I've still to find anyone to give me a definitive answer (chemically that is).

How do I clean Victorian mosaic floor tiles

That's actually Golv polish, and technically you don't really need it on encaustic tiles although you can use it if you wish. It leaves a satin polymer polish across the surafce of the tile. The HG remover is designed specifically to remove the golv polish and it won't clean as well as the...

Waterproofing grout - Can it be done?

IUndeed, it soaks in to the grout and make that impervious, but it doesn't make the grout any more of a waterproof barrier then it was before.

Tiling over plaster in the real world.

I wait until it goes pink, then thoroughly prime it. On one or two jobs where the walls were a right mess this meant a two week delay whilst the plaster dried properly. One thing to consider, two weeks in 30 degree heat in July is like 6 weeks in December with a dehumidifier running constantly.

Tiling bathroom walls should they be waterproofed first?

The easiest one to use is BAL WP1 tanking kit. You only need this in the area that will get wet, i.e. the shower. Once you've strpped the paint then prime the walls with a specialist primer such as BAL APD. All of these products are available at good tile distributors, your Local Topps...

    Cost of levelling a floor

I'll give you a ballpark:- BAL Mulitbase will cover 5 sq/m per 25kg bag at a thickness of 3mm. So if your floor is level and all the screed is doing is provide a smooth surface then 5 bags should do, a few hours for the guy to come and do it all. £250 - £300 ballpark. Obviously if...

Tiling bathroom walls should they be waterproofed first?

Tiling onto paint isn't a great idea, Always remove it if you can as effectively a layer of paint is holding all the tiles , adhesive and grout to the walls. If the paint is so well adhered that it can't be removed then you'll probably be ok if it's just a bath and basin splashback. If...

Waterproofing grout - Can it be done?

My question is, is there anything available which I can just apply with a small brush? No not that I'm aware of, plnety of additives available that enhance the grout, but not a paint on cure all as far as I know.

All depends how thick the screed needs to go. BAL Mulitbase or similar form of self levelling screed is what your looking for.

    tiling in the bathroom

    (C) is the favourite option. (B) happens occasionally and isn't a huge problem as long as the bath is sealed properly. (A) is not adviseable.

    FLOOR TILES

The most difficult and unpleasant tiles to cut are mosaics, so take all the suite out and give yourself as much of a run as possible. Mosaics are not rigid tiles, they can stretch when being fitted so can't really be set out millimeter perfect. The best bet is to lay the sheets out dry and...

    Bathroom tile......

Colour is more important that tiles size, if your tyrying to create a spacious room than you need to go for bright highly glazed tiles with a a bright grout. If you've got room and want more design then a stronger colour will do this or a contrasting grout. Example, if you tile a wall in a...

    Wall tiling methods

If you have the opportunity to do so, replace the plywood in the shower with a product purposely desinged for that area, such as Aquapanel, Hardibacker, wedi board, lux board or anyting designed to be a tile backer board. Tile don't like a product that expands and contracts, in fact tanled...

    Noraplan rubber tiling

As a rule of thumb, whenever I come across a product I've not fitted before, I contact the manufacturer for specific instructions. I've yet to find one that isn't forthcoming with advice, and it saves a list of hearsay advice you get through the grapevine.

    GROUT

Fine for walls, it's a much higher spec than you require which is no problem at all. You might find it a little messy to actually do, so get a quality grout float and take your time. Don't allow it to dry for too long before you wash it, it contains additives to make it flexible, these...
