PVA and why you shouldn't use it as a tiling primer.

Gravity has probably helped a great deal in keeping your floor in place. It's unsound advice to use PVA under any form of tile adhesive for the reason explained above, it does actually stop a large proportion of the adhesive bonding to the substrate. BAL SBR is designed for this very...

PVA and why you shouldn't use it as a tiling primer.

You don't specifically require a primer the same way as you would for a plastered wall. But if you have a very dusty screed or concrete substrate this may impair bonding. You can wash over this with BAL SBR which is a cheap bonding agent for flooring. If it's particularly bad you can mix this...

To Tank or not to Tank????

WP1 is good stuff I also use this in most of my shower installations. The CCL wet decs are a commercial specification of this, the waterproof membrane is whole world more substantial then WP1, but then it's desgined to cope with more than the WP1 kit. Every wet room I've installed so far...

PVA and why you shouldn't use it as a tiling primer.

You use a tiling primer designed specifically for this application, BAL APD, Ardion 51 or similar, depending on which adhesive your'e using. This will stop the suction, but witht he correct primer it won't go live on contact witht he water contained in the adhesive. Just don't use PVA.

Repair advice for a chipped ceramic floor tile

Not really, I'd just pull it aout and replace it, assuming you have spares. Take your time removing it, cut all the grout out from around the tile then break the tile from the centre outwards, never at any point try to lever it up around the outside, you will chip other tiles.

To Tank or not to Tank????

You absolutely must tank. Your tiler is categorically wrong, find another tiler immediately. What make of tray have Fired Earth sold you? Wedi Fundo or similar? They should also be supplying detailed instructions to fit and details of the membrane system, if they haven't take it back. I've...

    Pain or Urban Myth?

Many years ago when I worked in London, I'd been for a night out and was catching a late train home, we were delayed and it took a dogs age to get home. Next day we found out some poor chap had had a skin full, was stood on the station and it was quiet, the toilets were a long walk down the...

PVA and why you shouldn't use it as a tiling primer.

Unibond are one of the largest producers of PVA in this country, they are the only manufacturer that still recommend it is used with their tiling products. Ardex, BAL, and Nicobond, the three main producers whose products I use, all specifically say don't use it, in fact it invalidates any...

    Re-tiling a fireplace

    a) A hammer and bolster and a lot of elbow grease. b) I think you mean adhesive reidue, grout is the substance used to fill the gaps between the tiles not stick it to the walls, see a) above for how to remove. c) not quite sure what you mean here...grout that has been sanded down or grout...

What do I lay rubber floor tiles on?

I'd ask the manufacturer of the tiles what their specification is for substrate preparation. Probably a self levelling screed if it's concrete, but it depends on the make of the tile and use they will be subjected to.

    The Big Con

Taking the naked figures as they are without considering where and why these properties are empty is only looking at half the statement. A percentage will be unfit for habitation through subsidence, but the vast majority will be in areas of extreme unemployment. It's pointeless shipping...

    Slate Floor Tiles On Floorboards?

It's not a problem as long as the floor is suitably strengthened. Assuming you have traditional floorboards you can do one of the following:- 1/ Remove the floorboards back to the joists and fit 25mm WBP ply, tile directly onto this. 2/ Remove floorboards and fit 18mm ply, then...

    Underfloor heating

Warmup are the market leader, and are much of a muchness with many of other companies, but I find their digital thermostats are more user freindly. And go for the mesh option on the heating mat rather than the single wire, easier to fit (I staple the mesh to the floor normally).

    Latex screed

Most latex screeds are for internal use only and will break down if subjected to any amount of moisture regualrly. There are some available which are a higher spec and will suit your application but these will have to be sourced for a specialist supplier or good tile distributor. Arditex...

PVA and why you shouldn't use it as a tiling primer.

A while ago I wrote a post for another forum which explained the reasons behind not using PVA as a tiling primer, it is posted below for your information, I've been asked to copy it to various other forums and thought it might be useful here also. I hope it is of some help. Oh and if you do...
